<strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> Catalog student life<strong>College</strong> Chaplain<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> has a full-time chaplain who servesto support the spiritual lives of students. TheChaplain’s Office sponsors weekly opportunitiesfor worship, study, volunteer service andethical reflection. Because we live in an increasinglydiverse world, the <strong>College</strong> Chaplain worksintentionally to develop programs that speakto the needs of students from all faith backgrounds.The Chaplain also serves as advisorto the Campus Spirituality Coalition, a studentgroup devoted to promoting greater understanding,mutual respect, and harmony amongpeople of varying religious backgrounds.On campus, students may take part in Sundaynight worship services in the Chapel, RomanCatholic campus ministries, Bible studies, supportgroups, lectures, and special Friday NightTorah Study and Shabbat Observance eventsrelated to religion and spirituality. Studentshave many opportunities for leadership in campusministry by serving as a <strong>Sweet</strong> Spirit, asFresh Spirits or becoming involved with Habitatfor Humanity. A student-led chapter of CampusChristian Fellowship meets weekly for worshipand fellowship. The Chaplain is available tostudents for confidential pastoral counseling.In addition to on-campus spiritual opportunities,the Chaplain’s Office serves as a liaisonto many area churches, synagogues, andmosques which welcome <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> students.The Chaplain’s Office also assists students interestedin taking part in mission trips throughoutthe United States or to international venuesduring holiday, spring, and summer breaks.Lastly, the Chaplain’s Office sponsors theEthics Bowl, an intercollegiate debate programin which students have the opportunity to studyand debate ethical issues.Athletics[www.athletics.sbc.edu]At <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>, athletics and physical educationare an important part of the education of thetotal student. Department faculty and staff arecommitted to enhancing the physical, mentaland emotional well-being of all students as anintegral part of their educational experience.The Instructional Program offers a wide rangeof activities allowing each student to developskills and knowledge that will contribute to ahealthy lifestyle.The Intercollegiate Athletics Program providesopportunities for competitive excellence forstudents with advanced skills. Through highquality coaching, facilities and funding, studentathletesare afforded the opportunity to succeedboth as individuals and as team members. <strong>Sweet</strong><strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a member of the Old DominionAthletic Conference and NCAA Division III,sponsoring seven varsity sports for women infield hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming,tennis and volleyball.<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>’s 3,250-acre campus provides asuperb natural setting for jogging, hiking,biking, tennis, soccer, swimming, and manyother sports and outdoor activities. The newexpanded Fitness and Athletics Center facilitiesinclude basketball, tennis, badminton, racquetball,squash, and volleyball courts, weight-trainingequipment, a cardio-fitness center, fencingand aerobics room, elevated track, and a25-meter pool. Located on campus are fields forhockey, lacrosse, softball, and soccer, as well as14 tennis courts. The fencing club team playsa club schedule against a variety of colleges.Recreational, fitness and student club opportunitiesinclude basketball, volleyball, crosscountryrunning, tennis, touch football, soccer,spinning, aerobics, and other sports.Public Events[www.calendar.sbc.edu]From informative, entertaining talks by leadingauthors and scholars to dynamic dance concertsand cutting-edge art exhibitions, <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>’sevents schedule reflects the rich diversity andtastes of the <strong>College</strong> and its surrounding community.17
