To be eligible for the<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> Virginia Grant, studentsmust be enrolled at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> as full-time,undergraduate degree-seeking students.Academic Scholarships<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> is pleased to be able torecognize excellence in all its forms. The<strong>College</strong> values students of extraordinary overallacademic achievement, along with thosewho have developed special competence in theareas of art, natural science, music, humanities,or social sciences. <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> also seeks studentswho have shown superior involvement inschool and community activities.Named scholarship funds—Prothro,Founders, Commonwealth, Betty Bean Black,<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>, and Fletcher—are made possible bygifts provided by generous alumnae and friendsof the <strong>College</strong>. Such philanthropy has made itpossible for <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> to rank among the highestin the nation in the amount of endowmentper student.If a student wishes to be considered for anacademic award, her Application for Admissionand all supporting credentials must be completedby February l. She will automaticallybecome a scholarship candidate; there is noseparate application.Questions regarding scholarships should bedirected to the Admissions Office.Student Life<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong><strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> blurs the distinctionbetween formal classroom learning andstudent life. From serving on a judiciary committee,to hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains,to having a campus job, many of the experiencesstudents engage in outside the classroomcomplement their academic pursuits andbroaden their understanding of the world ingeneral. Because these experiences enhancethe curriculum, they are called co-curricularexperiences and grouped under the heading ofCo-Curricular Life.At <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>, curricular and co-curricularprograms work together to further the educationalmission of the <strong>College</strong>. Students are givenopportunities to connect classroom learningwith student life, as well as to contribute to adiverse campus community through participationin social, cultural, and recreational activities.Students are also encouraged to test theirknowledge and skills in off-campus internships,volunteer activities, and outdoor adventure programs.Academic life, involvement in sports andrecreation, and participation in a rich variety ofco-curricular opportunities are all parts of the<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> experience.Co-Curricular Life[www.ccl.sbc.edu]Through participation in co-curricular opportunities,students gain both self-knowledge anda greater sense of social responsibility.
