Candidates under the Honors Programmay receive departmental citations: with honors,high honors, or highest honors.Dean’s ListAt the end of each fall and spring term, theDean prepares a list of students who have shownoutstanding ability and achievement in the workof the term, including a 3.5 grade point averagewith a minimum of 12 graded academic hours.First-Year Honors ListFirst-year students who achieve an outstandingrecord, including a 3.3 grade point average witha minimum of 12 graded academic hours in thefall term, are recognized in January.Emilie Watts McVea ScholarsEach year the <strong>College</strong> recognizes academicachievement by conferring upon the highestrankingmember of each class the honorary titleof Emilie Watts McVea Scholar, a designationwhich bears the name of the second presidentof <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>. In order to be eligible,a student must have earned at least 24 credithours at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> by the end of thefirst year, or at least 56 credit hours at <strong>Sweet</strong><strong>Briar</strong> by the end of the sophomore year, or atleast 60 credit hours at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> by the endof the junior year.Phi Beta Kappa SocietyThe Theta of Virginia chapter was founded at<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> in 1950. With fewer than250 chapters nationwide, membership is highlyselective. Candidates must be completing atleast two years of residence at the <strong>College</strong>. Gradepoint average is an important, but not the sole,criterion for election. Weight is given to recommendationsfrom faculty and to the breadthof each candidate’s program as shown by thenumber and the variety of courses taken outsideher major. Also important are the balance andproportion in a candidate’s degree program asa whole. Finally, candidates must demonstrate aknowledge of mathematics and of a foreign languageat least minimally appropriate for liberalarts education.Alpha Lambda DeltaAlpha Lambda Delta is an honor society thatrecognizes academic excellence during a student’sfirst year in college. The purpose of AlphaLambda Delta is to promote a continued highstandard of learning and to encourage superioracademic achievement. A chapter was establishedat <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> in 1991. To be eligible, astudent must have earned a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.5 or higher in her first academicyear.Alpha Psi OmegaIn 2001, the Alpha Delta Beta chapter of AlphaPsi Omega, the National Honorary DramaticFraternity, was established at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>to honor outstanding students in Theatre Arts.Delta Phi AlphaThe Lambda Eta Chapter of Delta Phi Alpha, theNational German Honor Society, was founded in1951. The Society seeks to recognize excellence inthe study of German and to provide an incentivefor higher scholarship by promoting the study ofthe German language, literature, and civilizationand emphasizing those aspects of German lifeand culture which contribute to man’s eternalsearch for peace and truth.Eta Sigma PhiEta Sigma Phi is the national honorary society inclassics, founded in 1914. The chapter at <strong>Sweet</strong><strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> was established in 1995. The Greekletters Eta Sigma Phi stand for The Society ofThose Who Love the Classical Tradition. The201
