<strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> Catalog student lifeclubs, organizations, and groups to create innovativeand engaging programs, including eventsthat offer nothing more than fun and relaxation.The Division of Co-Curricular Life consistsof seven areas: Career Services, First andSophomore Year Student Programs, Healthand Counseling Services, Leadership Programs,Outdoor Programs, Residence Life, and StudentInvolvement and Programs. Students whochoose to become involved in one or more ofthese areas gain valuable experience by helpingfirst-year students adjust to college life, teachingpeers about health and wellness issues, coordinatinglectures and performances, or leadingstudents through a variety of outdoor adventures.Additional information about co-curricularprograms and events is available online.OrientationOrientation is the first step in a new student’scollegiate career. This program is designed tofamiliarize new students with the <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>campus. In addition, New Student Orientationis designed to help students become comfortablewith one another as roommates, classmates, andmembers of the <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> community.During this time, students meet with academicadvisors, learn the ins and outs of campuslife, how to use the computer network, how toget around the library, and gain an understandingof the Honor Code. In one Orientationactivity, Learning on the Land, students participatein an exploratory session that examines the<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> environment from different perspectives,including anthropology, art, ecology,history, horticulture, and music. These sessionsare created and taught by faculty, administratorsand staff members with a goal of combininglearning, recreation, and service. Session topicsand instructors vary from year to year.Students also become acquainted withthe many services, resources, and opportunitiesoffered at the <strong>College</strong>.<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> is an outstanding settingfor an active lifestyle balanced with moments ofquiet and contemplation. The <strong>College</strong> campuscovers 3,250 acres and includes woodlands,nature sanctuaries, farmland, lakes, a mountainouting cabin, the Rogers Riding Center,recreational facilities, and trails for hikers,bicycles, and horses. The outdoor componentof New Student Orientation helps make newstudents aware of these natural and recreationalresources.Residence Life<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>’s student residences provide aunique opportunity for students to learn, liveand grow in a dynamic and diverse community.Residential living offers students more than justa room; it is a vital component of a total educationalexperience. Living in a residence hallor apartment gives students the opportunityto develop self discipline, establish meaningfulrelationships, and become responsible membersof the community. The community includes allstudents, both those who live on campus andthose who enroll as non-residential and TurningPoint students.The <strong>College</strong> provides housing for studentsin eight different facilities. In addition to single-and double-occupancy rooms, there are anumber of triple and quad suites that includea common living area, as well as apartmentstyle living. Students eligible for an exemptionto the on-campus residency requirement mustlive with a legal guardian(s) in Lynchburg,Amherst County or Nelson County. Requestsshould be made to the Vice President/Deanof Co-Curricular Life. Students who turn 23years of age prior to the semester of theirenrollment are permitted to reside off campusupon approval of a written request to the VicePresident/Dean of Co-Curricular Life.The Office of Residence Life employs live-instaff members who help to create and maintaincommunity within student residence areas.These staff members have a high degree of visibilityand serve as resources for students:13
