iding programReligionSee the Department of Classics, Philosophy,and Religion on page 75.Riding ProgramThe <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> Riding Programis focused on the development of activeand responsible women utilizing interactionswith horses and horse sports and recreationalactivities in a strong instructional program asthe medium. This is accomplished by providingstudents opportunities to:a) develop skills in self-expression, self-discipline,and the self-confidence necessary toassume leadership rolesb) interact with and learn from humans andequines of diverse backgrounds and abilities,thus encouraging a sensitivity to othersc) understand their responsibility for their ownlearning which will enable them to be successfullearners long after leaving <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>.d) increase their skill, understanding, and fitnessfor equestrian pursuits, and ultimately,their own physical well-beinge) gain a sense of perspective regarding competitionand understand the many definitionsof “winning”f) explore and gain an appreciation of thehistorical development of equestrian sportand its impact on art, literature, and societythrough the yearsg) apply their accomplishments and experiencesto a variety of outcomes includingobtaining a job, gaining acceptance into apostgraduate program, competitive successas an exhibitor, development of a lifetimerecreational activity, and appreciation ofhorses and horse sports from the perspectiveof an educated audience.<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>The depth of the program’s impact onan individual is somewhat a reflection of herdegree of involvement with the program.There is an additional horse use fee for themounted courses (see <strong>College</strong> Fees). There is noadditional charge for coaching at competitions/activities or the lecture courses.CompetitionThere are three riding team opportunities:Spring Hunter Show Team which focuseson state and AHSA competitions as well asANRC Intercollegiate Championships; fall andspring term Club IHSA Team; and Fall FieldRiding Team which focuses on Hunter Trials,Hunter Pace events, and riding to hounds. Inaddition, a fall and spring term independentcompetitor’s calendar in hunter/jumper andequitation divisions as well as Fall HunterPaces and Hunter Trials is available to thosestudents whose other responsibilities do notallow a team commitment or to those studentsnot selected for a team. The <strong>College</strong> RidingProgram is a member of the Virginia HorseShow Association (VHSA), the IntercollegiateHorse Show Association (IHSA), the AffiliatedNational Riding Committee (ANRC, and theAmerican Horse Show Association (AHSA).The Riding Program sponsors a number ofcompetitive opportunities for riders of all levelssuch as “Fun Shows,” intercollegiate competitions,and AHSA competitions in the hunter/jumper and equitation divisions, including theUnited States Equestrian Team Talent SearchMedal Class.ConcentrationsThe instructional program offers a managementconcentration and a teaching and schoolingconcentration for students interested ina career in the equine industry and for thestudent/amateur who would enjoy expandingher knowledge and experience in these areas. Inconjunction with the concentrations, a rangeof potential internships have been developedincluding veterinary medicine in clinical andresearch settings, manufacturing, marketing,182­
