<strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> Catalog englishtional courses (12 hours) including ENGL 104and ENGL 228 (or their equivalents), THTR102, and an independent study (ENGL 461)in the teaching of composition. Students seekingan additional endorsement in theatre artsshould fulfill these requirements, which shouldinclude courses on British, American, and continentaldrama, and complete THTR 189 andTHTR 392.First-Year Writing RequirementInformationDuring their first semester at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong><strong>College</strong>, unless exempted from the first-yearwriting requirement, all students will beplaced in ENGL 100, Composition, ENGL 104,Thought and Expression, or, if they qualify afterdepartmental review, a 100-level writing-intensiveliterature course in the English department.Students with dual enrollment credit in Englishmay take a placement test administered by thedepartment to determine whether they will beexempted or placed in ENGL 100, ENGL 104,or a 100-level writing-intensive literaturecourse in the department.Students exempted from the first-year writingrequirement will be encouraged but notrequired to take a writing-intensive course inthe fall.Students cannot drop or withdraw from ENGL100, ENGL 104, or the 100-level writingintensiveliterature course they are taking inthe department to fulfill the first-year writingrequirement without the written consent of theinstructor, the chair of the department, and theDean of the college.A student who receives a grade of F in eitherENGL 100 or ENGL 104 must repeat thatcourse in consecutive semesters (for ENGL100, consecutive fall semesters) until she passesit. When a student passes ENGL 100, she mustenroll in ENGL 104 the following semester.Students taking a 100-level writing-intensiveliterature course to fulfill the first-year writingrequirement may not also use that course tofulfill the general education V.2 requirementor count it toward the requirements for themajors or minors in the department.First-year students should take ENGL 104(unless they have been exempted) and a 100-level literature course before enrolling in aliterature course at the 200-level or above.Exceptions require the permission of theinstructor and the chair of the department.Course Descriptions–EnglishENGL 100 (3)–CompositionPrerequisite: permission of the instructor. Astudy of the process of writing with practice in avariety of forms, emphasizing the developmentof composition skills. Offered every year in thefall semester.ENGL 104 (3)–Thought and ExpressionA workshop-based course that develops moreeffective reading and writing skills. It uses theprocess of revision to help students clarify theirprose and to construct cogent arguments andanalyses. Developing research skills and incorporatingsecondary sources into student workare also emphasized. FYW.ENGL 108 (3)–Women and LiteratureA study of women characters and women writersin English, American, and foreign literature.May be counted as an adjunct course toward theminor in gender studies. FYW, III.W, V.2, V.5.ENGL 109 (3)–The Origins of Fairy TalesMagic mirrors, sleeping thorns, elves, ogres,and talking animals - though commonplace inmodern animated films and children’s stories,the trappings of fairy tales find many of theirroots in the medieval imagination. This coursewill explore fairy stories from medieval Celticand Germanic literatures, investigating the culturalbeliefs that inspired them and tracingtheir development and enduring popularity intothe modern era.
