<strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> Catalog law and societyLAST 202 (3)–Latin American Culture IIAn introduction to the study of South Americathrough an interdisciplinary approach to the historyand culture of the continent. The historical,political, social, artistic and economic complexitiesof the region will be emphasized. V.4.LAST 261 (1, 2, or 3)–Directed StudyPrerequisites: One LAST course and permissionof the instructor. The study of introductorylevel material by an individual student or by asmall group of students under the immediatesupervision of a faculty member.LAST 302 (3)–Special Topics in LatinAmerican StudiesPrerequisite: ENGL 104; first-year studentswith permission. An exploration of a specifictopic in Latin American studies. Topics will varyby semester and the course may be repeated forcredit when course content changes. Topic forFall <strong>2010</strong>: “U.S. Hispanic Literature.” A studyof the rich and complex culture of the U.S.Hispanic community through its literary production.The issue of Hispanic identity will beexamined as it is represented in autobiographies,short stories, novels, and poetry by authors suchas Sandra Cisneros, Ana Castillo, Gustavo Perez-Firmat, and Gloria Anzaldua. This course maybe counted as the one course in English allowedfor the major in Spanish. V.2LAST 361 (1, 2, or 3)–Special StudyPrerequisites: 200-level LAST course and permissionof the instructor. The study of an intermediatelevel topic by an individual student orby a small group of students under the immediatesupervision of a faculty member.LAST 377 (1, 2, or 3)–InternshipPrerequisites: Three credits in LAST and permissionof the instructor, department chair,and dean. This course is graded P/CR/NC only.LAST 461 (1, 2, or 3)–Independent StudyPrerequisites: Two 200-level LAST coursesand permission of the instructor. Pursuit ofan upper level research project determined inadvance by the student in consultation with afaculty member who will act as the sponsor.Law and SocietyLaw and Society examines how institutions,organizations, and movements are definedby, and in turn define, the parameters of thelogic, rhetoric, structure, and administrationof legal rules in society. The focus is not exclusivelyon courts, lawyers, and judges, rather,on how cultural norms, economic relationships,artistic and literary imagery, and socialconstructions and hierarchies influence howlaw is articulated in society. Law and Society at<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> begins with three requiredcore courses providing the foundation for thethemes, issues, and methodologies of the studyof law in social contexts. Also required are theannually taught capstone seminar, as well as anacademically supervised internship approvedby the program director.
