2010 IN REVIEWGAME SUMMARIESGAME4The winless 49ers traveled to the Georgia Dome to face the Atlanta Falcons, looking to avenge the home loss in 2009, and more importantly, earntheir first win of the 2010 season. Yet, San Francisco’s inability to “finish”as well as costly turnovers at key moments of the game would eventuallylead to another loss as the Falcons were able to edge the 49ers, 16-14,off of a game winning K Matt Bryant 43-yd. FG. The Falcons started thegame with the ball and were forced to punt after 6 plays. With a new offensivecoordinator in Mike Johnson, the 49er offense immediately madean impact on its opening drive. QB Alex Smith put together a 10-play drive, starting at the SF 12-yd. line that included positive gains by five differentplayers. After marching 76 yds. down field to the ATL 12-yd. line, Smithtook a shotgun pass and connected with TE Vernon Davis for the TD. Theplay would initially be called down at the 1-yd. line, but after a head coachMike Singletary challenge, the play would be reversed for 6 points. K JoeNedney added the extra point and put the 49ers up 7-0. With the momentumin favor of the visiting team, the 49ers forced the Falcons to go3-and-out back at their own 12-yd. line. Looking to capitalize off of theshort field, the 49ers found an opportunity in the form of WR DominiqueZeigler and rookie S Taylor Mays. Zeigler blocked a P Michael Koenen punt, which was then recovered by Mays, who with a great sense of awarenessand athleticism, tip toed in the back of the end zone for the TD off of thedeflection. One more Nedney PAT gave the 49ers a 14-0 lead. On the firstplay of the Falcons subsequent drive, 49ers LB Parys Haralson sacked QBMatt Ryan for a 5-yd. loss. It would be one of two sacks for Haralson onthe day, which would mark his first two sack performance since 9/7/08vs. Arz. The Falcons eventually got on the board at the start of the 2nd qtr.as Ryan connected with WR Harry Douglas on an 8-yd. rec. for a TD. Followinga six-play 49ers drive that stalled out, the Falcons offense onceagain threatened to score after obtaining good field position near mid fieldfollowing a 19-yd. punt return by WR Eric Weems. On a 3rd and long playfrom the SF 18, 49ers CB Shawntae Spencer stepped up and intercepteda Ryan pass that was intended for TE Tony Gonzalez at the 6-yd. line. TheINT would not only mark his 2nd INT of the season, but gave him an INTin consecutive weeks for the first time in his career. Unfortunately for the49ers, Ryan would not be the only one intercepted this game as Smith waspicked off twice, once at the end of the 2nd qtr. and another at the beginningof the 3rd, after driving into Falcons territory on both drives. With fumblesand INTs plaguing both teams, it would come down to the late game heroicsthat would seal the deal for the home team. Bryant would connect on3 FGs throughout the game, including a game winning 43-yd. FG as timeexpired. What was more deflating for the 49ers was not that he convertedthe FG, but how it was set up following a 49ers fumble by CB Nate Clements, who had just intercepted a Ryan pass intended for Gonzalez. After Clementswas trying to take the pick for six, Falcons WR Roddy White chaseddown Clements and stripped the ball at the ATL 7-yd. line. The Falconswould recover and drive down the field to set up Bryant’s game winner.SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3ATLANTA 16, SAN FRANCISCO 14GEORGIA DOME1st 2nd 3rd 4th PtsSan Francisco 14 0 0 0 14Atlanta 0 10 3 3 16SF - V.
