2010 IN REVIEWGAME SUMMARIESGAME13With the holidays in full swing, the San Francisco 49ers opted for an early giftas they dominated the division leading Seattle Seahawks through 4 qtrs. of play.Having the chance to move within one game of the division lead, the 49ersestablished a plan and executed it to near perfection as they pounded the Seahawksand put up a season-high 40 points on their way to a 40-21 victoryat a cool and cloudy Candlestick Park. The story of the day could be found notin a single player, but in the team as a whole, as the offense would put up 361total yards combined with a defense that accounted for 5 turnovers, including 1TD. Having been sidelined since week 8 at Car., QB Alex Smith earned the startand immediately took control of the game, posting a career-high 130.5 passerrating as he threw for 255 yds. and 3 TDs, routing the division opponent. Onthe first drive of the game, Smith began his offensive onslaught with one of hisfavorite targets, TE Vernon Davis. The “11-85 connection” started it off with a22-yd. pass on the 3rd play of the game. Three plays later, Smith again foundDavis, connecting on a short pass that went for a 42-yd. TD to get the 49ers onthe board. After allowing QB Matt Hasselbeck to connect with WR Ruvell Martinfor a short 11-yd. TD pass, the 49ers defense locked in and put the foot on thegas, never looking back. K Jeff Reed provided consistency to the 49ers scoringas he hit 4 FGs on the day, including a 33-yd FG following the Seahawksinitial TD, to restore momentum for the home team. It was a performance theyhad been expecting the whole season and it finally became reality on the firstSeattle series in the 2nd qtr. as LB Takeo Spikes picked off a Hasselbeck pass. The INT led to a Reed 44-yd. FG and ignited a 49ers defense that proved to berelentless throughout the afternoon. Following the INT, the Seattle offense tookthe field looking to find an answer, but once again fell victim to turnovers causedby the 49ers as LB Travis LaBoy notched a sack, FF and FR on Hasselbeck. Thetakeaway led to the 49ers second TD opportunity as Smith hit WR Josh Morganfor a 15-yd. score, giving the 49ers a 20-7 lead. Continuing to spread the fieldon the next offensive drive, Smith completed a short pass down the middle toRB Brian Westbrook, who took it all the way to the house for a 62-yd. TD. Itwould be Westbrook’s longest play from scrimmage since 2006 and his longestcareer TD recept. Smith’s ability to spread the love marked the first trio of 49ersteammates to register at least 70 yds. receiving in a game since 9/9/01 vs. Atl.(WR Terrell Owens – 93 yds., WR J.J. Stokes – 93 yds., and WR Tai Streets – 81yds.). With the half coming to a close, S Reggie Smith gave Hasselbeck his 2ndINT of the day, picking off a pass intended for WR Deon Butler. The INT led to a22-yd. FG by Reed to close out the first half. Having said throughout the entireweek of practice that they would “step it up”, the 49ers defense held true totheir statements heading into the 2nd half. S Dashon Goldson began puttinga stamp on the game on the 2nd play of the 3rd qtr. as he intercepted a Hasselbeckpass and returned it 39 yds. for his 1st career TD. The 49ers big playmentality continued to plague the Seahawks offense, and just as they took thefield following their interception, CB Nate Clements was waiting. With Seattlethreatening, Clements stepped up and picked off Hasselbeck in the back ofthe end zone. The Seahawks would narrow the score to 40-14 late in the 3rdqtr. after a 92-yd. kickoff return TD by Leon Washington, which was followedby another score in the final two minutes of the game. The 49ers, however, came away with the important 40-21 victory to keep their playoff hopes alive.SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12SAN FRANCISCO 40, SEATTLE 21CANDLESTICK PARK1st 2nd 3rd 4th PtsSeattle 7 0 7 7 21San Francisco 10 20 10 0 40SF - V.
