On imperfectconditions with gray skies and rain, San Francisco found it to be the perfectsetting to earn its first win of the year, beating the silver and black, 17-9.After allowing the Raiders to march down the field on the opening drive, the 49ers defense was able to make a stand and hold Oak. to a 27-yd.FG by K Sebastian Janikowski to start the game. It would be one of manydefensive stops and would set the tone for 2 turnovers on the afternoon. The 49ers defense was also able to hold Oak. to 179 yds. of total offense. The first of 2 Oak. turnovers would come with 11:21 left to go in the firsthalf when 49ers LB Manny Lawson made a spectacular leap and grab topick off a Oak. QB Jason Campbell pass for an INT at the SF 43-yd. line. Itwas Lawson’s 2nd career INT and first since he picked off Rams QB MarcBulger at StL (11/26/06). The 49ers offense was unable to capitalize on theopportunity and the two teams would trade possessions for much of the 1stand 2nd qtrs., until with 11 seconds to go in the half, K Joe Nedney wouldnail a 25-yd. FG to get the home team on the board and bring the score to6-3 in favor of the Raiders. After a quiet first half that saw a combined 9pts. by both teams, San Francisco came out ready to capture its first victoryof the year. QB Alex Smith began firing on all cylinders late in the 3rdqtr., as he threw a laser deep down the middle of the field to WR MichaelCrabtree for a 32-yd. TD pass. The 13-play drive stretched 91 yds. andwould take 8:11 off the clock, allowing the 49ers to not only control theclock, but the game as well. With San Francisco leading 10-6 heading intothe 4th qtr., the team looked to pile on to its lead. With 7:21 left to go in thegame, Smith found TE Vernon Davis for a 17-yd. TD pass. It marked the3rd consecutive week the two had connected for a TD. The 49ers groundgame would also play a crucial role in the win as RB Frank Gore wouldhave another outstanding day as he once again eclipsed the 100-yd. plateaufor the 2nd time this season, rushing for 149 yds. on 25 carries. Withhis performance, Gore moved into 3rd place on the 49ers all-time list formost rushing yds. with 6,032, passing RB Ken Willard (5,930). Though the49ers air and ground game would set the pace, it was the defense that ultimatelysealed the win. Late in the 4th qtr., LB Takeo Spikes registered hisfirst INT of the season by picking off Campbell deep in Oak. territory. Fromthere, the 49ers were able to run out the clock and earn the 17-9 win. The49ers defense held the Raiders to a QB rating of 10.7, the lowest opposingQB rating since 10/1/72 at NO (QB Archie Manning – 8.7 QB rating).SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17SAN FRANCISCO 17, OAKLAND 9CANDLESTICK PARK1st 2nd 3rd 4th PtsOakland 3 3 0 3 9San Francisco 0 3 7 7 17OAK - S.
