The49ers used a <strong>com</strong>bination of RB Frank Gore (108 yards)and RB Maurice Hicks (64 yards) to take control on theground. S Mike Adams was the star of the game ondefense after finishing with two interceptions, one thatwas returned for a touchdown and the other that led tothe game-winning field goal in overtime. QB Alex Smithhelped lead the 49ers to a touchdown at the end of thefirst half by converting a key third-and-13 situationwith a 14-yard strike to WR Brandon Lloyd and thenthree plays later threw his first <strong>NFL</strong> touchdown passwhen he rolled to his right and found Lloyd in the backof the end zone for a 14-yard score. The 49ers tookthe second half kick and went on a 14-play, 56-yarddrive that ended with a 42-yard field goal by Nedneyto tie the game at 10-10. Houston responded whenBanks fired a 31-yard pass to WR Corey Bradford toget into San Francisco territory followed by a 25-yardtouchdown pass to Bradford to retake the lead at 17-10. Adams, who made his first <strong>NFL</strong> start at cornerback,intercepted QB Tony Banks at the end of the third quarterand returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to tie thegame at 17-17. Then in overtime, Banks went deepbut Adams intercepted the pass and alertly lateraled toS Ben Emanuel, who ran 35 yards to the Houston 21-yard line. The 49ers played the role ofspoilers when the victory knocked the Broncos out ofthe playoffs. The 49ers <strong>com</strong>e-from-behind win wasled by three outstanding individual efforts: RB FrankGore gained 153 rushing yards, PK Joe Nedney kickedfour field goals along with the game winner in overtime,and CB Walt Harris snagged two interceptions, includinga 28-yard touchdown return in the third quarter.WR Bryan Gilmore had two key plays in overtime toadvance the 49ers into field goal range for the gamewinning kick. During the first half, strong 49ers goallinedefense helped limit Denver to a pair of field goalson drives that were stopped when the Broncos werein first-and-goal situations. The 49ers defense againheld Denver to a field goal in the third quarter when theBroncos had a first-and-goal inside the five-yard line.Denver went ahead 13-0 in the second quarter whenCB Champ Bailey took a deflected theft 70 yards intothe end zone. DE Ron Fields forced QB Kurt Warnerto fumble on a sack in the end zone, and LB Tully Banta-Cain recovered the ball for a touchdown in overtime toseal the win. The play was set up after PK Neil Rackersmissed a 32-yard field goal in overtime. Rackers wassuccessful on a field goal from the San Francisco nineyardline, but the Cardinals were penalized for a delayof game penalty, moving the ball back to the 14-yardline where Rackers was wide to the left. A 59-yard puntby P Andy Lee followed by an Arizona penalty forcedthe Cardinals to begin their next drive at the three-yardline, setting up the 49ers defensive touchdown to getthe win. RB Frank Gore went over the 100-yard markfor the first time in 2007, finishing with 116 yards andtwo touchdowns, including a 35-yard touchdown runwith 1:25 to play to give the 49ers a 31-28 lead. Warner<strong>com</strong>pleted five passes on the ensuing drive to getArizona to the one-yard line with six seconds to play.CB Donald Strickland broke up a pass in the end zoneto force Arizona to settle for a 19-yard field goal astime expired in regulation. On the nextseries, DE Ray McDonald tipped a pass that was interceptedby Harris at the Seattle 41-yard line to helpset up the go-ahead touchdown. QB J.T. O’Sullivan<strong>com</strong>pleted back-to-back passes to WR Bryant Johnsonto move the 49ers to the 22-yard line to help getinto position for a two-yard touchdown run by RBFrank Gore to lift the 49ers in front, 27-20. Seattleresponded with a 15-play, 74-yard drive that endedin a touchdown to tie the game at 27-27. After bothteams exchanged field goals to get the score tied at30-30, the 49ers forced Seattle to punt from its own12-yard line and the 49ers began a drive at the Seattle49-yard line with 1:09 to play in regulation. The teammoved to the 23-yard line with three seconds to playto set up a game-winning field goal attempt. Nedney’s41-yard attempt sailed wide to the right to send thegame to overtime. The 49ers won the toss and electedto receive. O’Sullivan <strong>com</strong>pleted a 33-yard pass to WRIsaac Bruce on third-and-seven and a five-yard passto WR Arnaz Battle on a third-and-two situation topush the 49ers to the 23-yard line where Nedney connectedon a 40-yard field goal to give San Franciscothe win. Along with late game heroics thatcame down to the first overtime contest for the 49ersthis season, the game proved to be a classic NFC Westshootout. The Rams would also rely on a former HeismanTrophy winner in QB Sam Bradford to <strong>com</strong>e inand test the 49ers at home.
