The 49ers answeredback, scoring 14 unanswered points to closeout the first half. The Raiders dominated the thirdquarter, holding onto the ball for more than 11 minutesand scoring two touchdowns. After another score bythe Raiders to start the fourth, the 49ers started their<strong>com</strong>eback. After a Jeff Garcia-to-Terrell Owens scoringtoss and another score on a nine-yard touchdownrun by Charlie Garner, San Francisco tied the game at28. On their next possession, the Raiders drove down toSan Francisco’s 23-yard line, but on fourth-and-10,Janikowski missed a 41-yard field goal wide left. The49ers, with a chance to win the game, took possessionand moved the ball down to the Oakland 29-yard line.On fourth-and-one, the Raiders defense stiffened andstopped a leaping Charlie Garner for no gain. The 49ers put their first points of the gameon the board in the second quarter when Jeff Garciascored on a seven-yard run. The Falcons answeredback with two field goals and went up 20-7 at halftime.Terrell Owens, who did not catch a pass in the first half,roared back to catch nine passes for 183 yards and acareer-high three touchdowns. After a 49ers touchdown,at the hands of Kevan Barlow, and a touchdownby the Falcons, the 49ers were down 31-24 with just2:22 remaining in the game. Garcia led the team on a10-play, 72-yard drive when he hooked up with Owensfrom 17 yards out to tie the game at 31 with just 21seconds remaining. The 49ers won the toss in overtimeand drove to the Falcons 14-yard line. A mishandledsnap between Garcia and Dave Fiore, who was fillingin at center for an injured Jeremy Newberry, was recoveredby the Falcons and their offense took over. The49ers defense rose to the challenge, forcing Atlanta intoa three-and-out possession. After the punt, San Franciscobegan at its own 33-yard line. The 49ers struckagain when Jeff Garcia hooked up with Justin Swift fora one-yard touchdown and the 14-0 lead. The Bearsanswered back with a safety and a touchdown, makingthe score 14-9 at the half. In the third quarter, the49ers struck first when Garrison Hearst scored his firsttouchdown since 12-14-98 on a 60-yard bomb fromGarcia. The Bears offense then took over and drovedown to the 49ers 10-yard line where Zack Bronsonintercepted a Shane Mathews pass and returnedit a team-record 97 yards for the touchdown. After aChicago touchdown and a 49ers field goal, the scorewas 31-16 early in the fourth quarter. The game was asee-saw battle with each team going back and forthuntil the fourth quarter. The Panthers went ahead latein the fourth quarter after a Jeff Garcia interception.Wesley Walls scored on a 24-yard pass, but the twopointconversion failed, leaving the Panthers with a slim19-14 lead. On the next 49ers drive, Garcia was interceptedagain, this time deep in 49ers territory. The SanFrancisco defense held Carolina to only a field goal andthe 49ers were down 22-14 with just 1:52 remainingin the game. Garcia started the offense on its own 34-yard line and began the two-minute drill. The 49ersmoved down the field to the Panthers seven-yard line,where Garcia threw a fade route to Terrell Owens, whosnatched it out of the air with one second remainingon the clock to cut the score to 22-20. Garcia thenfound Eric Johnson in the end zone for the two-pointconversion to send the game into overtime. San Franciscowon the coin toss and started its drive at its own26-yard line. Garcia <strong>com</strong>pleted three-of-four passesfor 27 yards, while Garrison Hearst rushed twice for 34yards to bring the 49ers down to Carolina’s nine-yardline.
