2010 IN REVIEWGAME SUMMARIESGAME8The 49ers traveled to London, U.K. and Wembley Stadium in a Week 8 matchupto play host to the visiting Denver Broncos in the NFL’s 2010 International Series. It was the first time the 49ers had been in London since 1992, when theytook on the Washington Redskins in a preseason match, and the first time theyhad been out of the country since 2005, when they traveled to Mexico City in agame vs. the Arizona Cardinals. With the 4th NFL game in London in as manyyears, the 49ers and Broncos showcased their talents on an international stageand treated the fans at Wembley Stadium to an offensive display, combining for737 yds. of total offense. Having traveled “across the pond” immediately followingtheir week 7 matchup at Car., the 49ers used the extra days as a way toadjust to the time difference. With a productive week of practice and the sightsand sounds of London, the 49ers, in front of a crowd mostly dressed in red andgold, would go to work and find success in the most unlikeliest of places. One ofthose places would be in starting QB Troy Smith, who earned the start after QBAlex Smith was injured early in the 3rd qtr. a week prior against the Panthers.Smith, in his first start since 12/30/07, capitalized on the opportunity and ledhis team to victory as he completed 12 of 19 passes for 196 yds. and 1 TD, hisfirst TD pass since 11/9/08 vs. Hou. (14-yd. pass to TE Todd Heap). Along withhis 196 passing yds., Smith also registered a 1-yd. TD run. Smith and the 49erscombined for 339 total yds. on the day and earned their 2nd win of the season, beating the Broncos 24-16. It would be a slow start to the game, which saw atotal of only 3 points in the first half - a 34-yd. FG by K Joe Nedney. With bothteams returning from halftime eager to ignite their offense, Denver would findthe first opportunity, exposing the 49er defense early in the 3rd qtr. as QB KyleOrton found WR Brandon Lloyd deep down the middle for a 71-yd. completion.QB Tim Tebow entered the game and rushed for a 1-yd. TD run that putthe visitors up 7-3 through the first 3 qtrs. It would take all 4 qtrs. to finallyget the offense going, but the 49ers eventually would show up after Broncos KMatt Prater would send a 32-yd. FG through the uprights. With the score 10-3Broncos, Smith took it upon himself to lead his team and relied upon TE DelanieWalker for help. The two combined for 65 yds. on the following drive, includinga 38-yd. strike to Walker from Smith deep down the right side. It was followedby a 1-yd. TD run by Smith to begin a 21 pt. 4th qtr. for the 49ers. Walker registered85 rec. yds. on the day, establishing a new career high. After a slow start,Smith was able to find a groove and continued to roll on the next drive, findingWR Michael Crabtree deep down the left side for a 28-yd. TD pass. It markedCrabtree’s 3rd TD of the season. With the offense reeling, the 49ers defenseused the momentum to create plays for themselves. LB Manny Lawson cameup big on the very next Broncos drive as he stripped Orton for his 2nd FF of theseason and 8th of his career. The loose ball was scooped up by LB Takeo Spikesfor his first FR of the season and 17th of his career. Spikes returned the ball 8yds. to the Den. 18-yd. line and the takeaway led to a 3-yd. TD run by RB FrankGore, giving the 49ers a 24-10 lead late in the 4th qtr. Gore continued to be afixture of the 49ers offensive game plan as he rushed for 118 yds. and 1 TD on29 carries. It marked his 3rd consecutive 100-yd. performance and first sincehe did it 11/12/06 (159 yds. at Det.), 11/19/06 (212 yds. vs. Sea.) and 11/26/06(134 yds. at StL). Denver however, would not give up. Down but not out, theyput together a successful drive on the very next series as Lloyd would catch hissecond TD of the game, a 1-yd. rec. from Orton to bring the score to 24-16after K Matt Prater would miss the extra point. With the 49ers going 3-andouton the following drive, the Broncos would have one last chance to even thescore and force overtime. The 49ers defense however had other thoughts aswith 45 seconds left in the game, CB Shawntae Spencer took it upon himselfto close the game once and for all, picking off an Orton pass deep down theleft side that was intended for WR Jabar Gaffney to seal the win for the 49ers.SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31SAN FRANCISCO 24, DENVER 16WEMBLEY STADIUM1st 2nd 3rd 4th PtsDenver 0 0 7 9 16San Francisco 3 0 0 21 24SF - J.
