Tied at 13 entering the fourthquarter, the game see-sawed back and forth beforeheading into overtime. San Francisco scored first inthe fourth quarter when Jeff Garcia connected with TaiStreets for a three-yard touchdown to take the leadat 20-13. Oakland answered after the ensuing kickoffwent out of bounds and the Raiders got the ball at theirown 40-yard line. Oakland converted a crucial fourthand-threeplay to maintain possession and ended thedrive with a 10-yard touchdown run by Charlie Garnerwith just over six minutes remaining. The 49ers thenate up the clock with an impressive 13-play drive intoscoring position, where Jose Cortez missed a 27-yardfield goal at the end of regulation to send the gameinto overtime. The 49ers won the toss and launched a17-yard drive. However the Chargers reeledoff 10 unanswered points in the final period to tie thegame at 17 to send it into overtime. In overtime, theChargers won the toss and returned the opening kickoff39 yards. But the drive stalled there and San Diegowas forced to punt. On the ensuing 49ers possession,the offense drove down the field to the San Diego 23-yard line where Jose Cortez’s game-winning field goalsailed wide right. The Rams went ahead late in the fourth quarter,24-17, with 3:20 remaining. Undaunted, Jeff Garciacalmly led his team down the field for the game-tying13-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Owens with 19seconds remaining in regulation. The 49ers recovereda fumble on the ensuing kickoff and had the ball atmidfield. After an in<strong>com</strong>plete pass, Garcia connectedwith Cedrick Wilson on a 29-yard pass on seconddown with nine seconds remaining. Instead of fallingto the ground and taking a timeout, Wilson kept runningand was tackled as time ran out and the game headedinto overtime. The Rams won the toss and received thekickoff, which they returned to their 48-yard line. Aftera one-yard run by Marshall Faulk, the 49ers were penalized15 yards for a face mask penalty. Thefield goal kicking was the story of this game as the49ers missed both field goal attempts and made only1-of-2 PATs and the Cardinals made only 3-of-6 fieldgoal attempts. The Cardinals had the lead 13-6 in thefourth quarter when the 49ers tied the game on one ofthe most improbable touchdowns in team history. JeffGarcia fumbled at the one-yard line and the ball wasrecovered by offensive lineman Kwame Harris, whoscored his first career touchdown. The game was tiedat 13 with 2:25 left to play. The Cardinals had anothershot to get into scoring position, but were forced to puntand gave the 49ers one more shot for the victory withalmost six minutes remaining in regulation. San Franciscothen launched a drive that put the offense at theArizona 16-yard line. But Owen Pochman missed thepotential game-winning field goal, his second missedfield goal of the day, this time from 35 yards out. Thisbreathed new life into Arizona, who drove down to theSan Francisco 32-yard line. With five seconds remainingin regulation, Tim Duncan attempted the gamewinning50-yard field goal, which was short, and thegame headed to overtime. In overtime, the Cardinalswon the toss and drove down to the 49ers 22-yard linein eight plays. The two teams traded pointsback and forth heading into the final quarter. The 49erskicked a 25-yard field goal on the first play of thefourth quarter to cut Philadelphia’s lead to 21-20. OnSan Francisco’s next possession, Kevan Barlow ran for26 of his career-high 154 total yards and scored fromone-yard out to give the 49ers a 26-21 lead. The twopointconversion attempt was successful and the 49ershad a seven-point lead with five minutes remaining inthe game. The Eagles answered with a 10-play drive,adding seven points to tie the game on a Todd Pinkstontouchdown grab with a little over a minute remainingin regulation. Philadelphia won the overtime coin tossand started its drive at its own 21-yard line. Rattay coolly directedtwo late fourth-quarter scoring drives that sentthe game into overtime after trailing by 16 points with8:19 remaining. In overtime, Rattay again led the teamSAN FRANCISCO 49ERS \\336// MEDIA GUIDEdownfield and buoyed by a roughing the passer penalty,put them into scoring position where K Todd Petersonbanged home the game-winning 32-yard fieldgoal. Rattay finished the game with a CAREER-HIGH417 yards passing and a quarterback rating of 99.8.He was an impressive 14 of 20 for 115 yards and twotouchdowns in the fourth quarter. He also broke QBJoe Montana’s team record by <strong>com</strong>pleting 38 passes.Montana held the previous mark of 37. Rattay’s favoritetarget on the day was TE Eric Johnson who hauledin a career-high 13 receptions for 162 yards and onetouchdown. Johnson caught a six-yard touchdownfrom Rattay with 4:35 remaining in the game that pulledthe 49ers within 10 points. Rattay ran in the two-pointconversion and suddenly the 49ers were within eightpoints. Now they needed a stop and the defense was upto the task, forcing a Cardinals punt. Taking over at the49ers 28-yard line, Rattay started off with a nine-yardpass to WR Curtis Conway, then scampered 15 moreyards before hitting Conway on a 14-yard pass to getthe 49ers to the Cardinals 23. From there Rattay foundWR Brandon Lloyd in the corner of the end zone andthe 49ers were within two points. Lloyd then slippedin front of the defender and caught Rattay’s two-pointoffering sending the game into overtime. The 49ers wonthe overtime coin toss and never relinquished the ball.A roughing the passer penalty on Arizona’s DT DarnellDockett helped the 49ers cause and Rattay tookadvantage as he quickly moved the team into scoringposition where Peterson knocked home the gamewinner.1st 2nd 3rd 4th OT Final49ers 0 6 6 16 3 31Cardinals 0 14 0 14 0 28December 12, 2004San Francisco 31, Arizona 28First-year RB Maurice Hicks earned the game ball afteran inspiring 139-yard performance on 34 attempts.He and QB Ken Dorsey carried the 49ers to their secondvictory of the season, a 31-28 overtime victory inArizona. San Francisco did have to work for the win,despite taking a 28-3 lead in the third quarter. TheCardinals staged a furious rally and almost answeredthe 49ers overtime win earlier in the season at MonsterPark. But some key plays from the defense and the legsof Hicks proved the difference of the day. Hicks, makinghis first career <strong>NFL</strong> start, had four carries for 42 yards inovertime including a significant 17-yard gain that setupK Todd Peterson’s game-winning field goal. Facing2nd and 3 from the Cardinals 30-yard line, Hickstook the handoff from Dorsey, cut off the tackle to hisright and raced downfield before he was knocked out ofbounds at the 13. Dorsey finished the game <strong>com</strong>pleting18 of 34 passes for 191 yards and three scores for apasser rating of 99.0. Starting for the injured QB TimRattay, Dorsey threw his first career touchdown to WRBrandon Lloyd for the first score of the day. He thenconnected twice with WR Cedrick Wilson for scores asWilson led the receiving efforts with five receptions for83 yards and two scores, including a 19-yard catch tokeep the 49ers game-winning drive alive.
