Tom Gamble is in his 24th <strong>NFL</strong> season and his seventh year withthe 49ers. On February 4, 2011, Gamble was promoted to Director ofPlayer Personnel after having served as the Director of Pro Personnelfor the previous seven years in San Francisco.Gamble’s extensive <strong>NFL</strong> resume includes work in both college andpro scouting, contract negotiations, and a stint in the coaching ranks.While working closely with General Manager Trent Baalke, Gambleoversees both the college and pro personnel efforts. In his previousrole, Gamble monitored every <strong>NFL</strong> roster with an emphasis onscouting talent of up<strong>com</strong>ing pro free agents, while also maintainingcontinuous depth of personnel on the 49ers roster. In 2010, Gamblehad been assigned additional responsibilities in collegiate scoutingin order to maximize the use of his extensive experience in talentevaluation.During his time in the <strong>NFL</strong>, Gamble has helped build nine playoffteams – five with Indianapolis and four with Philadelphia. Prior tohis arrival in San Francisco, Gamble served as a college scout forthe Colts from 1998 to 2004 under veteran <strong>NFL</strong> executive Bill Polian.Gamble originally entered the <strong>NFL</strong> as an assistant in the player personneldepartment of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1988. He stayedwith the Eagles through 1994, serving as a college scouting administrator,area scout, contract negotiator, and later served as the directorof pro scouting.From 1995 to 1996, Gamble served as a defensive assistant/qualitycontrol coach with the New York Jets. He then worked as a parttimecollege scout for the Carolina Panthers before serving as a proscout for the Baltimore Ravens during the 1997 season.Gamble earned his B.S. from High Point University in 1987 and anM.S. from Rowan University in 1988. He grew up in a football family,where his father, Harry, served as the head coach at both theUniversity of Pennsylvania and Lafayette College. Harry was alsoformerly the President of the Philadelphia Eagles.Gamble and his wife, Juliette, have three sons, Tom, Gregory andMatthew.Joel Patten is in his second year with the 49ers as the Directorof College Scouting. He joined San Francisco with 14 years of <strong>NFL</strong>scouting experience and more than a decade of professional playingexperience. In his role, Patten oversees the college scouting staffand the daily operations of the department.In 2009, Patten served as a regional scout for the St. Louis Rams.Prior to joining the Rams, he was a national scout for the WashingtonRedskins from 2004-08, where he worked alongside 49ers VicePresident of Player Personnel Baalke, in 2004. Patten also spenttime as a regional scout for the Houston Texans (2000-03) and theRedskins (1996-99).Patten played eight seasons in the <strong>NFL</strong> and three in USFL as an offensivetackle. Having originally entered the <strong>NFL</strong> as an undraftedfree agent with the Cleveland Browns in 1980, he played in 56 careergames for the Browns (1980-82), Colts (1987-88), Chargers(1989-90) and Los Angeles Raiders (1991-92). He also played for theWashington Federals (1983-84) and the Orlando Renegades (1985)of the USFL.A 1980 graduate of Duke University, Patten and his wife, Betsy, livein Chantilly, VA, and have three children - Jake, Christina and Kimberly.SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS \\8// MEDIA GUIDE
