2010 IN REVIEWGAME SUMMARIESGAME5The 49ers welcomed in the Philadelphia Eagles on NBC’s Sunday NightFootball at Candlestick Park, but ultimately, competed with themselves asmistakes and turnovers once again cost them a football game. Head CoachMike Singletary would go on to say that “I think the best team we’ve playedso far is the San Francisco 49ers.” The 49ers committed 5 turnovers, includingone on the final offensive drive. It was the 2nd primetime contest inas many home games on the 2010 season and San Francisco quickly gotto work, and once again, put together a successful opening drive. QB AlexSmith orchestrated an 11-play, 51-yd. drive that was topped off with a7-yd. TD pass to WR Michael Crabtree for the score. It would be a precursorto Crabtree’s night as he would have a career game, posting 9 recepts. for105 yds., both career highs. Minus Crabtree’s TD in the first qtr., Philadelphia’soffense controlled much of the first half as QB Kevin Kolb spread theball throughout the field. With 2:23 left to go in the 1st qtr., Kolb connectedon an 8-yd. TD pass to TE Brent Celek and seemed to never look back. The 49ers offense tried numerous times to help themselves, but turnoverswould plague them throughout the night. With 23 seconds left to go in the1st qtr., RB Frank Gore would have one of his two fumbles on the night. Bothfumbles would be lost to Philadelphia and his first would lead to a 33-yd.FG by K David Akers, giving the Eagles a 10-3 lead. The 49ers offense triedto bounce back, but a tough Philadelphia defense wasn’t going to quit asSmith would be picked off by CB David Patterson on a deep ball intended forWR Ted Ginn early in the 2nd qtr.. Smith, like Gore, would also have multipleturnovers on the night (3). Just after the two-minute warning, Eagles RBLeSean McCoy sprang loose for a 29-yd. TD run and brrought the scoreto 17-7 in favor of the visiting team. The 49ers had a bit of an answer justbefore the half as K Joe Nedney hit a 50-yd. FG to make the score 17-10Eagles. Nedney’s kick marked his 17th career FG from 50+ and 10th as amember of the 49ers. After both teams traded possessions and went scorelessthroughout the 3rd qtr., The 49ers would mount one great effort in the4th qtr, but not before a costly Smith fumble at the Phi. 48-yd. line waseventually picked up by Eagles S Quintin Mikell and taken all the way backfor 6. After mistakes appeared to do in the 49ers starting QB, he stepped upand answered the call, connecting with TE Vernon Davis for the 7-yd. TDstrike with 7:40 left in the game. The 49ers defense also stepped up andhelped their chances as they forced Philadelphia to settle for a 45-yd. FGon the very next drive. Down by 10 points, WR Ted Ginn took the subsequentkickoff 61 yds. to give the 49ers prime field position at the PHI 36-yd. line. With the momentum on their side and coming off a TD drive, Smith puttogether another successful drive as he eventually found Gore on a 1-yd.TD throw to cut the Eagles lead to 27-24. The 49ers defense would comein and do its part, causing the Eagles to go 3-and-out to set up a gamewinningscenario. With 1:28 left to go in the game, the 49ers would haveone last chance to earn their first win of the season. After a pass completionto WR Josh Morgan would net them -3 yds., Smith went no-huddleand fired a 27-yd. strike deep down the middle to Davis who would bebrought down at the PHI 44. That would prove to be it for the 49ers. After twomore incomplete passes, Smith would drop back and appear to be hit as hethrew a pass intended for Crabtree. The pass would be intercepted by EaglesCB Trevard Lindley and seal the game, 27-24, in favor of Philadelphia.SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10PHILADELPHIA 27, SAN FRANCISCO 24CANDLESTICK PARK1st 2nd 3rd 4th PtsPhiladelphia 7 10 0 10 27San Francisco 7 3 0 14 24SF - M.
