SanFrancisco finished the year with a 6-10 record and athird place finish in the NFC West. The 49ers openedthe season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks.With the arrival of former USC head coachPete Carroll, the 49ers were not <strong>com</strong>pletely certainabout what to expect and were stunned by a 31-6loss. The Niners opened their home slate on MondayNight Football against the Super Bowl ChampionNew Orleans Saints to Candlestick Park. RB FrankGore rushed for 112 yds., and 1 TD on the groundand 1 through the air. 49ers QB Alex Smith passedfor 275 yards, but his heroics were not enough asNew Orleans posted a late FG giving the Saints a25-22 victory. A dismal offensive performance in a31-10 loss in Kansas City influenced head coachMike Singletary to let offensive coordinator JimmyRaye go and promote QBs coach Mike Johnson tothe role of play-caller. In week 4 the Niners traveledto Atlanta. The 49ers started fast but their inabilityto finish, however, ultimately cost them a win as theFalcons edged them,16-14. San Francisco returnedhome for its 2nd primetime matchup in as manyhome games. NBC’s Sunday Night Football pittedthem against the Philadelphia Eagles. Again, SanFrancisco showed up under the brightest of lights,posting 309 yds. through the air including 3 TDs, buta late game INT gave the 49ers their 5th straightloss of the season, 27-24. The 49ers added somerays of hope against the visiting Oakland Raiders.Gore accounted for 149 yds. rushing, leading the49ers offense to 349 yds. of total offense and earningthe Niners their first win of the season, 17-9.The 49ers next test would be at Carolina. The Ninersfailed to capitalize on a late-game lead and allowedthe Panthers to mount a 20-23 <strong>com</strong>eback victoryon a game-winning FG as time expired. Starting QBAlex Smith suffered an injured shoulder during the4th qtr. At 1-6, the team boarded a plane and traveledto London for a week-long road trip to squareoff with the Denver Broncos in the 2010 InternationalSeries game. With QB Troy Smith at the helmdue to the injury to Alex Smith a week earlier, the“home team” defeated Denver, 24-16. After the byeweek, the 49ers returned home to defeat division foeSt. Louis 23-20 in OT, behind the big-play arm ofTroy Smith and the Frank Gore run game. The ensuing21-0 shutout by Tampa Bay at Candlestick, thefirst home shutout since 1977, inspired the squadfor a prime-time, MNF showdown at Arizona. Thedefense held the Cardinals to just 13 yds. rushingand forced 2 turnovers. Unfortunately, perennial ProBowl RB Frank Gore suffered a fractured hip duringthe contest ending his season. After a forgettable34-16 loss to Green Bay at Lambeau Field, SanFran erupted for a season-high 40 points againstthe visiting Seahawks. Mike Singletary had handedthe started QB role back to Alex Smith after the GBloss, and he went on to throw for 255 yds. and 3 TDsin the 40-21 win. Despite the momentum the Ninersseemed to gain they lost, 34-7, at San Diego ina Thurday night matchup. Despite a 5-9 record, SanFrancisco was still in NFC West hunt. Looking for aspark Singletary once again switched QBs, this timeto Troy Smith. The spark that was expected nevercame to be and the 49ers suffered a devastating,25-17, loss at St. Louis. With the division title andall playoff hopes out of reach, team President andCEO Jed York relieved head coach Mike Singletaryof his duties that evening. Defensive line coach JimTomsula was later promoted to interim head coachfor the final week of the season. The 49ers battledto finish the season with a favorable taste in theirmouths vs. Arizona.
