148 Sector 13. Coast of Greece—Saronikos Kolpos13.3 Poros (37˚30'N., 23˚27'E.), a large town, stands along the Wside of Khersonisos Porou at the E end of Limin Pogonos. Thesmall town of Galatas is situated on the mainland to the S of it.A conspicuous clock tower and a black marble column standon the SW extremity of Khersonisos. A naval college stands ona small promontory 0.3 mile NNE of the clock tower and isfronted by several mooring buoys. Quays fronting the town areused by ferries, small craft, and yachts with drafts of up to3.5m.13.4 Stenon Methanon (37˚39'N., 23˚25'E.), deep andclear of dangers, lies between Khersonisos Methanon, on the Sside, and the islands of Aiyina, Moni, and Angistrion, on the Nside.13.4 Caution.—Due to the existence of submarine power cables,anchoring prohibited areas, which may best be seen on thechart, extend between the E part of the N coast of KhersonisosMethanon and Nisos Aiyina and between the W part of the Ncoast of Khersonisos Methanon and Nisis Agistri.13.4 Khersonisos Methanon (37˚36'N., 23˚22'E.), amountainous peninsula, is joined to the mainland at the S endby a rocky isthmus, 77m high. Its coasts are precipitous and arefronted in places by above-water rocks. Korifi Kheloni (Khioniza),an extinct volcano, stands near the center of the peninsula.It is 743m high and forms the summit. The town of Methanastands at the SE side of the peninsula and is fronted by a smallharbor. The quays have depths of up to 6m alongside and areused by local ferries and small coasters. There is also a smallcraft and yacht basin.13.4 Nisis Moni (37˚41'N., 23˚26'E.), a rugged islet, is separatedfrom the SW coast of Nisos Aiyina by Stenon Monis, a narrowchannel with depths of 27 to 36m, within which the winds arealways confusing. This islet is 179m high, steep-to, and is coveredwith pine trees in its N part. A light is shown from its SWextremity.13.5 Nisis Angistri (37˚42'N., 23˚21'E.), 292m high, iscovered with pine trees. Nisis Dhorousa, a rocky islet, liesclose off the SW end of this island. A channel, 0.2 mile wide,leads between the island and the islet and has depths of 13 to15m in the fairway. The village of Angistri is situated on theNW side of the island and is fronted by a small craft harbor.13.5 Stenon Vathi leads between Akra Kostis, the SW extremityof Nisis Moni, and Akra Skilomanga, the S extremity of NisisAngistrion, 4 miles WSW.13.5 Nisis Kira lies 2.3 miles WNW of Nisis Dhorousa. Thissmall island is 137m high and is fronted by rocks on its SEside. Spalathronisi, a steep-to islet, lies 0.7 mile W of NisisKira and is marked by a light on its NE side. The passage lyingbetween them is deep and clear.13.5 Nisis Metopi lies with its S end located 0.8 mile NE of NisisAngistrion. This islet is 18m high and surrounded by rockyfoul ground. Stenon Angistrioun a narrow channel, lies betweenthis islet and the NE side of Akra Angistrion and isavailable to small vessels with local knowledge. The fairway,which has a least depth of 5.5m, leads between the rocky shoalbanks extending from either shore and is only about 200mwide.13.6 Nisos Aiyina (37˚43'N., 23˚30'E.) lies on the NE sideof Stenon Methanon and near the middle of the gulf. Thisisland consists generally of barren hills, but some fertile valleysand plains lie on its W side. Oros, 532m high, is the summitof the island and stands near the S end. The Temple ofAphaia, a perfectly developed classical temple, stands on a hillat the NE end of the island.13.6 Akra Krasopilia is the NE extremity of Nisos Aiyina. AkraTourlos is located 0.5 mile S of Akra Krasopilia and is markedby a light. This point is fronted by five small and rocky islets,one of which resembles a boat under sail. Nisis Nisidha, asmall islet, lies about 0.2 mile offshore, 0.7 mile WNW ofAkra Krasopilia. It is surrounded by rocks and should be givena wide berth.13.6 Ormos Ayias Marinas, a small bay, is entered 2 miles SW ofAkra Krasopilia and affords temporary anchorage, during fineweather, in any convenient depth over a bottom of sand andweeds. Yachts anchor, in depths of 4 to 6m, in the NW cornerof the bay and landing can be effected at a pier in a cove at theN end of the bay. A village, with a prominent church andseveral hotels, is situated close within the head of the bay.13.6 Akra Plakakia, marked by a light, is the NW extremity ofNisos Aiyina and lies 7 miles W of Akra Krasopilia. The coastbetween is fronted by rocks in several places.13.6 The town of Aiyina, with several prominent buildings and acathedral, stands 1.2 miles SSE of Akra Plakakia and is frontedby a small harbor which is protected by breakwaters. Thequays have depths of up to 3.7m alongside and are used byyachts, fishing vessels, and local ferries.13.6 Ormos Marathonos, a small bay, indents the SW side ofNisos Aiyina and is sheltered from W and NW winds. It providesspacious and excellent anchorage. A good berth lies indepths of 18 to 35m, mud and sand, about 0.5 mile SW of thetown of Marathon which stands on the NE side of the bay.13.6 Stenon Metopis leads between the shoals fronting the NWside of Nisos Aiyina and the shoal extending ENE from the Nend of Nisis Metopi. The navigable fairway through this passageis 0.4 mile wide and has a least depth of 8.5m.13.6 Caution.—Vessels are prohibited from approaching within50m of the N and E coasts of Nisos Aiyina for 2 miles W and Sof Akra Krasopilia.13.7 Kolpos Epidhavrou (37˚35'N., 23˚17'E.), a smallgulf, is entered between the NW side of Khersonisos Methanonand Akra Kleftis, about 6.5 miles W. A conspicuous churchstands near the coast at its SW end. This gulf is subject toheavy squalls because of the surrounding mountainous land ifthere is any wind.13.7 Ormos Ayios Vlasi, a small bay, lies close S of Akra Kleftis.During good weather, especially in summer, this bay affordstemporary anchorage in its N part, in depths of 24 to 37m,sand. However, vessels should leave this roadstead if windsfrom the E arise.13.7 Limin Palaias Epidhavrou, a small inlet, is entered betweenAkra Kleftis and Akra Kalamaki, 0.4 mile N. Small vesselswith local knowledge can anchor in its SW part, in depths of 3to 6m. A small town, with a conspicuous church, is situated atthe head of the inlet and stands at the foot of steep woodedslopes. It is fronted by a shallow small craft harbor.Pub. 132
Sector 13. Coast of Greece—Saronikos Kolpos 14913.7 Akra Trakhili, fronted by a small islet, is located 4.5 miles Nof Akra Kalamaki. The coast between is indented by severalsmall coves which provide limited protection to small vesselswith local knowledge.13.7 Ormos Sofikou lies in the NW part of a bight which isentered between Akra Trakhili and Akra Trelli, 2.8 milesNNW. This cove affords anchorage to small vessels with localknowledge, in depths of 7 to 9m, hard and fine sand. However,as this cove is surrounded by high land, the winds are alwaysconfusing.13.7 Petronisi, 54m high, lies 1 mile E of Akra Trelli and is frontedby a bank, with a depth of 14.8m, on its E side. The passageleading W of this islet is deep and clear.13.8 Akra Spiri (37˚48'N., 23˚10'E.) is located 2.6 milesN of Petronisi and a chain of islets projects E for 14 miles fromthis point.13.8 Nisoi Dhiaporioi (Nisidhes Pendanisia) (37˚49'N.,23˚16'E.), consisting of a group of six islets, lies at the W endof this chain. Nisis Ayios Thomas, 42m high, is the W islet ofthis group and lies 2.8 miles E of Akra Spiri. Nisis AyiosIoannis, 81m high, is the N and largest of the group. NisisMolathi, the E islet of the group, lies 1 mile SE of the E end ofNisos Ayios Ioannis and is fringed with rocks and shoals. Vesselsshould avoid approaching this group of islets.13.8 Nisis Ipsili, 140m high, lies 2 miles ESE of Nisis Molathiand is the highest islet of the chain. Nisis Stakhtorroi, 20mhigh, lies 1.5 miles NE of Nisis Ipsili and is fringed by a shoalon its S side. Nisis Platia, 15m high, lies 1 mile ESE of NisisStakhtorroi and is steep-to except at its SW side.13.8 Nisidhes Eleousai (Nisidhes Lagouses) (37˚49'N.,23˚28'E.), consisting of a group of four islets fringed by reefs,lies 3.6 miles E of Nisis Platia. Nisis Lagousa, the E and largestislet of this group, is 34m high and is marked by a light at its Eend.13.8 Kolpos Kenkhreon (37˚53'N., 23˚05'E.), a large bay, lies atthe NW end of Saronikos Kolpos and is entered between AkraSpiri and Akra Ayioi Theodhoroi, 7.5 miles NNW.13.8 Nisis Evraios, 83m high, lies in the S approach to the bay 3.5miles NNW of Akra Spiri. This bluff islet is marked by a lighton its NE side and several rocks lie close off its W extremity.Nisis Platia, 25m high, lies 2.5 miles W of Nisis Evraios and isfringed by a shoal bank.13.9 Akra Kekhries (37˚52'N., 23˚00'E.) is a small andrugged promontory on which stands the ruins of a mill. It is theS entrance point of Ormos Kenkhreon, a small bight, whichlies at the W side of Kolpos Kenkhreon. This bight is open tothe E and provides anchorage to small vessels with local knowledge.13.9 Akrokorinthos, a conspicuous city in ruins, will be seenrising over the comparatively low land extending to the W ofOrmos Kenkhreon. It is situated on a hill, 573m high, whichrises 6.5 miles WNW of Akra Kekhries.13.9 The SE entrance of Dhiorix Korinthou (Corinth Canal) lies 3miles N of Akra Kekhries. For further information on thecanal, see paragraph 7.24.13.9 Several white mounds of earth stand along the W side of theapproach to the canal entrance and are conspicuous from seaward.13.9 Vessels waiting to enter the canal may anchor in a designatedarea, which may best be seen on the chart, which extends up to0.7 mile SE of the canal entrance. This area has depths of 11 to31m and the holding ground is good. The bottom consists ofsand in the center and mud and sand near the shore. Care mustbe taken not to obstruct the approach to the canal entrance.13.9 Ormos Kalamaki (37˚53'N., 23˚00'E.) is entered 3.7 milesNNE of Akra Kekhries at the NW extremity of Kolpos Kenkhreon.13.9 The village of Kalamaki stands on the NE side of OrmosKalamaki; a soya factory is situated close SE of it. The factoryis fronted by a T-shaped pier with a berthing face 85m long anda depth of 11m alongside.13.9 The N side of Kolpos Kenkhreon to the E of Kalamaki isdescribed with the N side of Saronikos Kolpos beginning inparagraph 13.26.13.9 Caution.—A prohibited anchorage area, which may best beseen on the chart, extends S from the N shore of KolposKenkhreon.Saronikos Kolpos—East Side13.10 Akra Sounion (37˚39'N., 24˚02'E.), the SE entrancepoint of Saronikos Kolpos, is formed by a high headland. It issurmounted by the conspicuous ruins of a temple which consistof about fifteen columns of white marble. A rocky shoal, with aleast depth of 6m, lies close off the SW side of the point.13.10 Limin Sounion, a cove, lies on the W side of Akra Sounionand provides shelter for small craft with local knowledgeduring N winds. Anchorage can be taken, in depths of 7 to11m, in the center of the cove. The bottom is mainly coarsesand and the depths decrease to 2m near the shore. There arealso patches of stones and rocks which cause the holdingground to be uncertain in places. Nisis Arkhi, a small islet, liesin the approach to the cove 0.4 mile W of Akra Sounion.13.10 Ormos Legrainon, with a noticeable sandy beach, is enteredbetween a point, located 1.2 miles WNW of Akra Sounion andanother point 1 mile W. This small bay provides convenientshelter and is frequently used when strong N or NE windscombine with a current setting S and make the passage of lowpowered vessels through Stenon Keas and Dhiekplous Kafireosimpracticable. Vessels can anchor, in a depth of 10m, mud, inthe center of the bay.13.10 Nisis Patroklou (Nisis Gaidhouroniso) (37˚39'N., 23˚57'E.),251m high, is precipitous and is marked by a light on its NEside. This island is separated from the mainland by a passagewith a least depth of 11m in the fairway. A dangerous wrecklies close off the SW extremity of this island and a dangerousrock lies about 0.7 mile E of the NE extremity.13.11 Akra Katafili (37˚40'N., 23˚56'E.), located 4.2 milesWNW of Akra Sounion, is marked by a light. A prominent hill,233m high, stands close inland of this point.13.11 Ormos Anavissou, a small bay, is entered 2.7 miles N ofAkra Katafili and, during summer, affords suitable anchoragefor small vessels with local knowledge. It is not safe in winterexcept during N winds. Depths decrease from 20m in theentrance to 8m within the bay. The village of Fokaia, withseveral prominent hotels, is situated at the E side of the bay andis fronted by a small craft harbor.Pub. 132
