However, the depression between these peaks is soslight as to give the appearance of a tableland.16.18 The high land of Khersonisos Trikkeri forms the S side ofthe gulf; the mainland coast forms the W and N sides.16.18 Nisis Palaion Trikerion, 109m high, lies off the NW end ofKhersonisos Trikkeri, 3.5 miles NNE of Akra Kavoulia (AkraTrikkeri). A prominent hotel, formerly a monastery, stands onthis islet. Nisis Pithou, a small islet, lies 1 mile NW of the NWend of Nisis Palaion Trikerion.16.18 Caution.—Fishing nets, often unmarked at night, are reportedto be moored within the more sheltered parts of PagasitikosKolpos.16.18 An area prohibited to navigation, which may best be seen onthe chart, lies in the W part of Pagasitikos Kolpos and extendsup to 4 miles E from the shore. Vessels must not enter this areawithout permission of the naval authorities.16.19 Ormos Amaliapoleos (Mitzellas) (39˚10'N.,22˚54'E.), a small bay, lies on the E side of Khersonisos Almiros,a peninsula, which projects N from the SW side ofPagasitikos Kolpos. It is sheltered from the E by Nisis AyiosNikolaos, an islet, lying close off the coast. The prominentresort town of Amaliapolis stands at the W end of the head ofthe bay and is fronted by a shallow pier. Vessels can anchor, indepths of 16 to 29m, mud, sand and weed, off the pier.16.19 Ormos Nies, entered 3.8 miles SSE of Ormos Amaliapoleos,provides temporary anchorage, but is exposed to N winds.16.19 Ormos Almirou is entered between Akra Almirou, the N extremityof Khersonisos Almiros, and Akra Angistri, 7 milesNNE. The W shore of this bay is backed by low and marshyground and the prominent town of Nea Ankhialos stands in theNW corner. A submarine pipeline extends 0.4 mile S from apoint on the shore close W of Akra Anistri. A cement factorystands 0.5 mile W of Akra Anistri and is fronted by a loadingberth consisting of several dolphins and mooring buoys.16.19 Ormos Sourpis (39˚10'N., 22˚51'E.) lies in the SW part ofOrmos Almirou and is entered W of Khersonisos Almiros.Tsingeli, a settlement, is situated on the SW side of this bayand can be easily identified by a house with a prominent redroof. A jetty, with a depth of 3.5m alongside its head, fronts thesettlement. Anchorage can be obtained, in a depth of 12m,about 0.4 mile E of this jetty. A wreck, with a depth of 7m, anda shoal, with a depth of 8m, lie about 0.4 mile and 0.7 mileENE, respectively, of the head of the jetty. It is reported that apier, 500m long, fronts a factory standing close N of Tsingeli.16.19 Ormos Trikkeri, a large bay, lies at the S side of the gulf andindents the W part of the N side of Khersonisos Trikkeri. It isentered 3 miles SE of the NE end of Nisis Palaion Trikerion.Nisis Prasoudha, an islet fronted by shoals, lies close off the Eshore of this bay and is 13m high. Generally, the depths withinthis bay are too deep for anchoring, but small craft can moornear the head.16.19 Ormos Vathoudhi, a small bay, lies at the SE side of the gulfand indents the NE part of Khersonisos Trikkeri. It is entered5.6 miles E of the NE end of Nisis Palaion Trikerion andprotected on the W side by Nisis Alatas, a long and narrowislet. The village of Milina, fronted by a pier, stands on the NEshore of the bay and a prominent abandoned monastery issituated on the SE side of Nisis Alatas. Vessels can anchor, in adepth of 30m, in the middle of the S part of the bay.16.20 Ormos Volou (39˚19'N., 22˚59'E.), a large bay, indentsthe head of Pagasitikos Kolpos and forms the approach tothe port of Volos. It is entered between Akra Angistri and apoint, 3.5 miles ENE.16.20 Ormos Agrias lies at the E side of this bay and the smalltown of Agria, fronted by several piers, stands along its shores.Vessels can anchor, in depths of 13 to 20m, within this smallbight.16.20 A conspicuous cement factory, with a chimney, and an oildepot, with several tanks, are situated 1.3 miles NW of Agria.16.20 A short pier, with a depth of 9.5m alongside its head, frontsthe oil depot. Tankers, with drafts of up to 7.9m, can berthstern-to at this pier.16.20 Two jetties front the cement factory. The E jetty, 130m long,has a depth of 20m alongside the head and a small foul groundarea lies close S of it. The W jetty, 200m long, has a depth of13m alongside the head.Volos (39˚22'N., 22˚57'E.)World Port Index No. 4247016.21 The port of Volos lies at the head of an inlet on theNW side of Ormos Volou. This inlet is entered between AkraSesklo and Akra Goritsa, 1.3 miles E. The harbor is protectedby a breakwater which extends WSW from the E side of theinlet.16.21 Winds—Weather.—The prevailing winds in the winter arefrom the NNE and in the summer from the SSE. Duringautumn and winter, strong NW winds are sometimes experienced.16.21 Depths—Limitations.—Several piers extend from the Nshore of the harbor and provide 2,500m of total quayage withdepths of 8.3 to 11.6m alongside. There are facilities for generalcargo, tanker, ro-ro, and bulk vessels. Vessels of up to35,000 dwt, 200m in length, and 9.8m draft have been accommodatedalongside.16.21 Aspect.—The prominent commercial part of the town backsthe NE side of the harbor. A conspicuous hospital, with a redroof, stands in the SE part of the town and a prominent silostands on the N side of the harbor. A tower is situated near theroot of the breakwater and a belfry stands 0.2 mile NNW of it.The prominent ruins of a white house are situated close W ofAkra Sesklo and a light is shown from a framework towerstanding 300m S of the point. The shoal bank on the S side ofthe harbor entrance is marked by a lighted buoy.16.21 Pilotage.—Pilotage is compulsory. Pilots can be contactedon VHF channel 6 and board about 1 mile SE of the harbor entrance.16.21 Anchorage.—Vessels can anchor, in depths of 16 to 22m,about 0.8 mile SE of the head of the breakwater. Large vesselsusually anchor, in depths of 35 to 40m, about 2 miles SE of thehead of the breakwater.16.21 Caution.—It is reported that crosswinds or currents maysometimes cause difficulty in transiting the harbor entrance.16.21 A detached shoal patch, with a least depth of 10.2m, liesabout 0.6 mile SE of Akra Sesklo.16.21 A foul patch, the remains of a wreck, lies on the N side of thefairway, 0.2 mile SE of the head of the breakwater, and has aleast depth of 9m.Pub. 132
