174 Sector 15. Greece—Channels West of Nisos EvvoiaOrmos Raftis (Ormos Markopoulou) (37˚53'N., 24˚02'E.), asmall bay, lies on the W side of the gulf, 5.6 miles NNW ofAkra Mavrovouni. Akra Koroni, the S entrance point of thebay, is the termination of a conspicuous promontory, 131mhigh. Nisis Koroni, a small islet, lies close off the E side of thepromontory and is 41m high. Nisis Raftis, 93m high, lies in theentrance to the bay, 0.3 mile NNE of Akra Koroni. This islet ismarked by a light and its summit is surmounted by a largewhite statue. Nisis Raftopoula, a small islet, lies 0.4 mileWNW of Nisis Raftis and is 16m high. Both of these islets maybe passed on either side.15.5 Oros Perati, a bold and prominent hill, rises behind the N entrancepoint of the bay and is 306m high. Nisis Perati, a smallislet, lies about 0.4 mile offshore, 1.3 miles N of the N entrancepoint. The land to the W of the head of the bay rises to sharprocky hills.15.5 Akra Pounda is the extremity of a narrow peninsula projectingfrom the head of the bay. Small towns stand on theshores of the two coves formed by this peninsula and are frontedby small craft harbors. The area is a resort and numeroushotels and villas stands along the shores of the bay.15.5 The bay affords a large area for anchoring, but it is open tothe E and the depths are rather considerable in places. Theholding ground is not as good as in Ormos Thorikou. The bestanchorage berths lie, in a depth of 15m, about 0.5 mile SW orabout 0.2 mile NE of Akra Pounda.15.5 Akra Velani (37˚59'N., 24˚02'E.), located 6.8 miles N ofAkra Koroni, is a low cape. Two islets, known as Kokkinonisia,lie near the edge of a shallow bank which extends up to 0.4mile SE from the cape. A prominent church stands on the Wislet and a light is shown from the E islet.15.5 Ayios Ioannis, standing 2.8 miles SW of Akra Velani, is thehighest of the hills in this vicinity and a conspicuous churchsurmounts the summit.15.5 Ormos Rafinas (38˚01'N., 24˚01'E.), a small and sandybight, lies 2 miles NNW of Akra Velani. A small town standsalong the shore of the bight and is fronted by a small craftharbor which is protected by a mole and a breakwater. Theharbor has depths of up to 6m and is mostly used by pleasurecraft and ferries. Numerous villas and hotels extend along theshores to the N and S of the harbor.15.6 Akra Mandhili (37˚57'N., 24˚31'E.) is the SE entrancepoint of Kolpos Petalion. Nisis Mandhili, 87m high, lies0.5 mile SSE of this point. A main light is shown from a conspicuousstructure, 8m high, standing near the SE end of thisislet. The passage leading between the islet and the coast isdeep.15.6 Ormos Karistou (37˚59'N., 24˚26'E.), a large bay, lies at theNE entrance to Kolpos Petalion and affords refuge for thosevessels unable to navigate Dhiekplous Kafireos during strongNE winds. It is entered between Akra Bouri, located 2 milesWNW of Akra Mandhili, and Nisis Paximadhi, 4 miles W.Nisis Paximadhi, 13m high, is a small islet which lies close Sof Akra Paximadhi and is marked by a light.15.6 The town of Karistos stands at the head of the bay and isfronted by a small quayed harbor which is formed by twobreakwaters. The harbor has depths of 2.6 to 5m and is used bysmall craft and local ferries. A prominent chapel stands on asmall islet at the W side of the bay and a conspicuous whitechurch stands in the center of the town.15.6 Vessels can anchor in the bay, but should be prepared forviolent squalls which blow down from the high land during Nwinds. The usual anchorage is in depths of 18 to 30m, sand,about 0.6 mile S of the main breakwater. However, this roadsteadis not good because the holding ground is poor and it isexposed to all S winds.15.7 Nisoi Petalioi (38˚00'N., 24˚15'E.), lying close off theSW side of Nisos Evvoia, consists of a group of islands andislets. The currents, which are greatly influenced by theprevailing winds, run strongly between the islands and islets inthis group.15.7 Nisis Megalo Petali is the SW and largest island of thegroup. This island is 371m high and lies with its SE endlocated 5.2 miles WNW of Nisis Paximadhi.15.7 Stenon Xero, a narrow passage, leads between the two largerislands of Nisoi Petalioi and the coast of Nisos Evvoia. At theN end of this strait, shoals extend from the shores and reducethe width of the fairway, which has a least depth of 11m. Vesselsapproaching this strait from the S should avoid two shoalswhich lie up to 1.2 miles offshore, 3.5 miles NW of Nisis Paximadhi.15.7 Marmari (38˚03'N., 24˚19'E.), a village, is situated at the Eside of a small bay. It is fronted by a small craft harbor which isprotected by a mole and used by yachts, local ferries, andfishing boats. The coast in this vicinity is low and the buildingsof the village are prominent. Vessels can anchor, in depths of22 to 31m, mud, close off the village.15.7 Akra Vigla (38˚05'N., 24˚12'E.) is located 10.7 miles NW ofNisis Paximadhi. Nisis Elafi, a small islet, lies 0.4 mile SSE ofthe point and is 53m high.15.7 Nisis Akio, 22m high, lies on a bank 2.1 miles W of AkraVigla. This islet may be passed on either side.15.7 Nisis Dhipsa, a low islet, lies 4.5 miles WNW of Akra Viglaand is marked by a light. This islet may also be passed oneither side.Kolpos Petalion—North Part15.8 Akra Marathonos (38˚07'N., 24˚03'E.), the S extremityof a narrow promontory, 79m high, forms the SWentrance point of the N part of the gulf. Akra Strongilo, located5.7 miles E of this point, forms the SE entrance point. Oros Pirgadhi,a prominent hill, stands 2 miles ENE of Akra Strongiloand is 451m high. Trokhalos, a small craft harbor, lies 3.2miles NE of Akra Strongilo and is protected by two breakwaters.15.8 Several islets and rocks lie in this part of the gulf and considerablyreduce the navigable width of the passage.15.8 Akra Ayia Marina (38˚12'N., 24˚05'E.), located 4.7 milesNNE of Akra Marathonos, is a bluff headland, 217m high,marked by a light.15.8 Nisidhes Verdhouyi (Berdugi Islets), a group of four islets,lies centered 1.6 miles ESE of Akra Ayia Marina. The NW andSE islets of this group are marked by lights. The channelleading W of the group has a least depth of 11m; the channelleading E of it is deep and clear.Pub. 132
