159SECTOR 14GREECE—KIKLADHES NISOI14.0 Plan.—This sector describes the islands of the S Aegeanarchipelago which are collectively known as Kikladhes Nisoi.The descriptive sequence begins with the W group, which lieson the E side of the S approach to Saronikos Kolpos, andproceeds N from Nisos Milos to Nisos Kea. The S group isthen described and includes Nisidhes Khristiani, Nisos Thira,and Nisos Anafi. Descriptions of the N and S central groupsfollow. The S central group includes Nisos Folegandros, NisosIos, Nisos Anidhros, Nisos Amorgos, and Nisidhes Liadhi. TheN central group includes Nisos Paros and Nisos Naxos withtheir neighboring islands. Lastly, the N group is described andincludes Nisos Yiaros, Nisos Siros, Nisos Mikonos, NisosTinos, and Nisos Andros.General Remarks14.1 Tides—Currents.—The general S or SW current inDhiekplous Kafireos sets at 2 to 3 knots. However, it is greatlyaccelerated by strong N winds and rates of 5 to 7 knots havebeen experienced.14.1 This S or SW current continues through Steno Keas. Thegeneral rate of the current in this passage is 2 to 3 knots, butwith very strong N winds, rates of 5 to 7 knots have beenexperienced.14.1 Caution.—Navigation within Dhiekplous Kafireos can bedifficult for low-powered vessels, small craft, and <strong>sailing</strong>vessels because of strong currents and N winds, especiallyduring the summer months. Such vessels should use StenonDhisvaton or Stenon Mikonou and in either case pass S ofNisos Kea. Vessels unable to pass through this channel in a NEdirection are advised to seek shelter in Ormos Gavriou orOrmos Karistou. Numerous submarine cable areas extendbetween the islands and islets of Kikladhes Nisoi and may best beseen on the chart.Kikladhes Nisoi—West Group14.2 Nisos Milos (36˚41'N., 24˚27'E.), a mountainousisland, is almost divided into two parts by Ormos Milou, anextensive bay. When approached from the NW, it has theappearance of two peaked hills. Korifi Profitis Ilias, the summitof the island, stands near the SW end and is 751m high. Thesurface of the island is rugged and bare, while the valleys andlow-lying areas are fertile. There are thermal springs on theisland and extensive mineral deposits.14.2 Nisis Paximadhi (36˚38'N., 24˚19'E.), marked by a light,lies 1 mile SSW of Akra Psalis, the SW extremity of NisosMilos. This low islet is surrounded by dangerous rocks andshould be given a wide berth. The inshore passage is clear inmid-channel but vessels are advised to pass to the SW of theislet.14.2 Nisidhes Ananes (36˚33'N., 24˚09'E.), a group of rockyislets, lies 9.2 miles SW of Nisis Paximadhi. A light is shownfrom the highest islet which attains a height of 70m. This groupshould be given a wide berth.14.2 Akra Psalis (36˚39'N., 24˚19'E.), the SW extremity of NisosMilos, is fringed with rocks. The S coast of the island is steepto,for the most part, with shoals extending seaward from a fewpoints.14.2 Ormos Provato lies 6 miles E of Akra Psalis and is enteredbetween Akra Akrotiri and Akra Zefiros, 1.7 miles E. Smallcraft may obtain anchorage, sheltered from N winds, near thehead of this bay which is divided into two parts by a smallprojection. A reef, with a depth of 2m, lies on a rocky shoalwhich extends up to 0.4 mile S of Akra Zefiros.14.2 Akra Stili (36˚40'N., 24˚31'E.), the SE extremity of NisosMilos, is the termination of a tongue of land which is frontedby foul ground and a large above-water rock. A rocky shoal,with a depth of 3.7m, lies about 0.5 mile SE of this point.Vessels rounding the point should keep well clear.14.2 Vrakhoi Ktenia (36˚38'N., 24˚35'E.), lying 3.2 miles SE ofAkra Stili, consists of two isolated, steep-to, and unmarkedabove-water rocks.14.2 Akra Roma, the E extremity of Nisos Milos, is located 2miles NNE of Akra Stili and a conspicuous factory is reportedto stand 0.3 mile N of it.14.2 Ormos Voudhia (36˚45'N., 24˚32'E.), entered 3 miles N ofAkra Roma, is open to the E. A jetty, used for loading ore, issituated at the N end of this bay. It is 100m long and has adepth of 11m alongside the head. Vessels of up to 23,000 dwtcan be accommodated. Strong winds from the S or SE makeberthing dangerous. A local pilot is available. On arrival,vessels usually anchor within the bay. The recommended berthis about 0.5 mile SSE of the jetty.14.3 Akra Akrotiri (36˚41'N., 24˚19'E.), located 4.2 miles Nof Akra Psalis, is a prominent point fronted by several rocks. AkraKalefati is located 1.5 miles NNE of Akra Akrotiri and is alsofronted by rocks. Akra Vani, the NW extremity of Nisos Milos, islocated 1 mile NE of Akra Kalefati and is high and rocky.14.3 Nisos Andimilos (36˚48'N., 24˚14'E.), rugged and precipitous,lies 6 miles NW of Akra Vani and attains a height of 686m. Thisisland is surrounded by great depths and is conspicuous from agreat distance. A light is shown from its W side.14.3 Dhiavlos Andimilou, the channel leading between NisosAndimilos and Nisis Milos, is deep and clear of dangers. Dueto the high land, sudden gusts of wind often blow close offshoreon both sides of this strait. A current is reported to set S,close to the W coast of Nisos Andimilos.14.3 Ormos Milou (36˚43'N., 24˚26'E.), a large bay, indents theN coast of the island and provides a safe anchorage. It isentered between Akra Vani and Akra Fourkovouni, 2.4 milesE. The shores of the bay are generally high and bold, but theland within the head is low and marshy.14.3 Akra Bombardha is located on the NE side of the bay, 2.5miles SE of Akra Fourkovouni. This point is formed by a lightcoloredbluff and is marked by a light. A prominent warPub. 132
