Coast of Greece—Saronikos Kolpos13.16 Caution.—An area in which anchorage is prohibited, whichmay best be seen on the chart, lies in the SW part of OrmosKeratsinou.13.16 A submarine pipeline, which may best be seen on the chart,crosses the NW end of Ormos Keratsinou near the S entranceof Stenon Navstathmou.13.17 Hercules Port (Limin Irakleous) (37˚58'N.,23˚36'E.), an annex to the port of Piraievs, lies at the NE cornerof Ormos Keratsiniou. It consists of an inner harbor, protectedby a breakwater, and an outer container terminal which extendsto the W of the inner harbor. A conspicuous tall chimneystands near a mill which is situated close to the root of thebreakwater.13.17 The inner harbor has 5,450m of total berthing space withdepths of 4 to 12.5m alongside. It has facilities for generalcargo, bulk, and ro-ro vessels. Vessels of up to 10m draft canbe accommodated alongside.13.17 The container terminal has two quays, 950m and 700m long,with depths of 7.2 to 13m alongside.13.17 Perama (37˚58'N., 23˚35'E.), a small town, is situated alongthe W part of the N shore of Ormos Keratsiniou and is anannex of the port of Piraievs. An oil terminal fronts a storagedepot situated in the E part of the town. It consists of a jettywhich extends 350m SE and has depths of 9 to 11m alongside.The W part of the town is fronted by extensive ship repairfacilities. A small harbor for fishing vessels fronts the W end ofthe town.13.17 Ormos Ambellkion (37˚57'N., 23˚33'E.), a small inlet, liesin the SW corner of Ormos Keratsiniou and contains mooringsand repair facilities for naval vessels. There are depths of 6 to10m in the entrance which decrease regularly toward theshallow and sandy head of the inlet. Several lay-up berthsextend along the N side of Khersonisos Kinosoura to the E ofthe entrance to this inlet.13.17 Caution.—Several dangerous wrecks are located N ofKhersonisos Kinosoura and caution should be exercised whilenavigating in the vicinity.13.18 Stenon Navstathmou (38˚00'N., 23˚35'E.), the N partof Stenon Salaminos, is entered from Ormos Keratsiniou NE ofAkra Pounda which is located 1.4 miles WNW of AkraKinosoura. A coastal bank extends about 0.4 mile E of AkraPounda and is marked at its seaward edge by a lighted buoy.13.18 Nisis Ayios Yeoryios lies at the SW end of the channel 0.7mile NW of Akra Pounda. This islet is 9m high and is connectedat its W end to the E side of Nisos Salamis by a causeway.A conspicuous tank stands at the E end of this islet. Ashoal lies on the W side of the channel about 0.3 mile N of theE end of the islet. It has a least depth of 7.1m and is marked bya lighted buoy.13.18 A government dockyard and a naval base, which are backedby hills, front the E side of Nisos Salamis between Nisis AyiosYeoryios and Akra Arapis, 1.3 miles N. A prominent hill,210m high, stands 0.7 mile W of Akra Arapis.13.18 Nisis Leros, 61m high, is located with its NE extremity 0.9mile NNE of Akra Arapis. This islet lies at the NW side of thechannel and is connected at its SW end to Nisos Salamis by acauseway. Several mooring buoys lie along the W side of thechannel between Nisis Ayios Yeoryios and Nisis Leros.13.18 Akra Filatouri, marked by a light, is located on the E side ofthe channel 0.6 mile E of Akra Arapis. Nisis Arpidhoni lies 0.2mile offshore, 0.6 mile NE of Akra Filatouri. This islet islocated at the seaward edge of the coastal bank and is markedby a light at its W end.13.18 Nisis Megali Kira, 18m high, lies at the NE end of thechannel and is marked by a light. This islet along with NisisMikri Kira, another islet lying close SE, are collectively knownas Nisidhes Farmakousai. These islets are connected to eachother and to the mainland by causeways. A pier, 100m long,extends SE from the SE side of Nisis Megali Kira and a pier,120m long, extends SSW from the SW side of Nisis MikriKira.13.18 Limeniskos Amfiali, a small harbor, lies on the NE side ofthe channel, 1.2 miles NE of Akra Filatouri. It is protected by abreakwater and the quays in the N part have a depth of 4.9malongside.13.18 The fairway leading through Stenon Navstathmou has amaximum permissible draft of 10.9m (1998).13.18 Regulations.—A speed limit of 6 knots is in force within thechannel.13.18 Vessels are prohibited from passing in the channel and, at alltimes, S bound vessels have priority of passage over N boundvessels.13.18 Tug escorts are required for vessels over 120m in length fordaytime transits and for vessels over 75m in length for nighttransits.13.18 All traffic movements are controlled by the naval authorities.Foreign vessels desiring to transit this passage should requestpermission from Piraievs Port Authority or Elevsis PortAuthority. Requests should include the name of the vessel,nationality, grt, length, maximum draft, destination, cargo, andtime of passage.13.18 Night transits are discouraged by the authorities. However, ifunavoidable, requests for such must be made at least 6 hours inadvance and not later than 2000.13.18 Caution.—Landing on Nisis Ayios Yeoryios is prohibited.13.18 A ferry runs across the S part of the channel.13.18 Navigation prohibited areas, which may best be seen on thechart, front the shores on both sides of the channel fairway.13.18 Several submarine cables and pipelines lie across the channeland may best be seen on the chart.Nisos Salamis—Southwest Side13.19 Akra Kanakia (37˚53'N., 23˚24'E.) is located 2.5miles NW of Akra Konkhi, the S extremity of the island. Thecoast between is rocky, indented and mostly steep-to. A rockyreef, with a least depth of 7.1m, lies about 0.3 mile SSW ofAkra Kanakia.13.19 Nisidhes Kanakia, consisting of two islets, lies 0.7 mileNNW of Akra Kanakia and is fronted by rocks. The W andsmaller islet is marked by a light.13.19 Akra Petritis (37˚56'N., 23˚24'E.), fronted by rocks, islocated 2.1 miles NNE of Akra Kanakia. Ifalos Mastif, a rockyreef, lies about 1 mile N of this point and has a least depth of7.1m.13.19 Ormos Salaminos (37˚57'N., 23˚25'E.) indents the W coastof Nisos Salamis and is entered between Akra Petritis andAkra Karas, 1.7 miles NNE. The townof Salamis (Koulouri) is situated at the head of this bay and isfronted by a small craft harbor. Vessels can anchor, in a depthof 9m, mud, about 0.4 mile SW of the harbor or in a depth of22m, mud and weed, about 1 mile SW of the harbor.13.19 A prominent war memorial is reported to stand on the N sideof the bay near the head.13.19 A naval fuel depot is situated on the S side of the bay, 1.5miles E of Akra Petritis. It is fronted by a T-shaped jetty withdolphins and mooring buoys on each side. The head is 60mlong and has a depth of 10m alongside. A submarine pipelineextends about 300m NNE from close E of the jetty and severalbuoys lie at its seaward end.13.19 Pilotage is compulsory within Ormos Salaminos. For furtherinformation, see pilotage for Piraievs in paragraph 13.14.13.19 Caution.—Navigation and anchoring without permission areprohibited within an area, which may best be seen on the chart,which extends up to 0.5 mile N of the fuel depot. This area ismarked by yellow conical buoys. Similar buoys mark the limit ofshoal water on the W side of the approach to the jetty.Poros Megaron—Southwest Approach13.20 Nisis Revithousa (37˚58'N., 23˚24'E.), 47m high, lieswith its SE extremity, which is marked by a light, located 0.5mile WNW of Akra Karas, the N entrance point of OrmosSalaminos. A shoal, with a least depth of 5.8m, lies about300m W of the W end of this island and is marked by a lightedbuoy moored close W of it. Vessels proceeding into KolposElevsinos generally pass to the E of this island.13.20 Nisis Makronisos (37˚58'N., 23˚25'E.), 42m high, lies in theinner approach to Poros Megaron, 0.5 mile N of Akra Karas.This island is marked at its W extremity by a light. A channel,suitable for small craft, leads N of the island. The fairway isnarrow and has a least depth of 5.3m.13.20 The main channel leading to Poros Megaron passes to the SEof Nisis Makronisos. The fairway, which has a least depth of10.8m, is marked by lighted buoys.13.20 Akra Tikhos (37˚58'N., 23˚25'E.), located 0.8 mile NNE ofAkra Karas, is the E termination of a promontory and forms theSW entrance point of Poros Megaron. A conspicuous radiomast stands close W of this point.13.20 Megara Oil Terminal (Agia Trias) (37˚58'N., 23˚24'E.) lieson the S side of the promontory 0.8 mile W of Akra Tikhos. AT-head pier, 205m long, extends SE from the shore. Its head is63m wide and has a depth of 12.8m alongside. Tankers of up to85,000 dwt and 12m draft can be accommodated.13.20 Pilotage is compulsory and is provided from Piraievs. Pilotscan be contacted by VHF and with prior notice board off AkraPetritis. Vessels proceeding to this terminal for the first timeare advised to embark the pilot off Piraievs harbor.13.21 Ormos Ayiou Yeoryiou (37˚58'N., 23˚26'E.) lies atthe E side of the inner approach to Poros Megaron 1.4 milesENE of Akra Karas. This bay provides good shelter and isbordered on its N side by a promontory which forms the NWend of Nisos Salamis. Depths of less than 5m lie up to 0.2 mileoffshore at the head of this bay and a patch of foul ground liesin the NE corner. Vessels can anchor, in a depth of 13m, mudand sand, good holding ground, about 0.4 mile W of the headof the bay.13.21 Ormos Vourkadhi, a shallow bay, lies on the W side of PorosMegaron, 1.2 miles NW of Akra Tikhos. It is available only tosmall craft with local knowledge.13.21 Poros Megaron (37˚59'N., 23˚25'E.) lies between the NWside of Nisos Salamis and the mainland to the W. This straitconsists of a channel which leads 0.6 mile NW from the Sentrance and then 0.9 mile NE into Kolpos Elevsinos. The fairway,which is marked by lighted buoys, is dredged to a depthof 7.9m over a bottom width of 180m.13.21 A conspicuous tank farm is situated on the NW side of thechannel.13.21 Generally, vessels up to 183m in length and of suitable draftcan use this passage.13.21 Pilotage is compulsory for foreign vessels of 150 grt andover and Greek vessels over 1,000 grt. For further information,see pilotage for Piraievs in paragraph 13.14.13.21 Caution.—Vessels about to enter Poros Megaron fromeither end should give a signal of one prolonged blast.13.21 A ferry runs across the N part of the channel.13.22 Kolpos Elevsinos (38˚01'N., 23˚31'E.) is a landlockedgulf lying at the N head of Kolpos Saronikos. It can be approachedfrom the SE via Stenon Salaminos or from the SWvia Poros Megaron.13.22 The S, SE, and N sides of the gulf are backed by steepmountains. The coast on the NE side is low and is backed by acultivated plain. Numerous factories and industrial plants aresituated along this stretch of the gulf. The NW side of the gulfis covered with pine woods and backed by a plain.13.22 The bottom of this gulf is notably level and the shores are,for the most part, bordered by shallow banks. Long periods ofN winds may reduce the water level in Kolpos Elevsinos by asmuch as 0.6m.13.22 A wreck, with a depth of 10.5m, lies about 1 mile NNW ofthe N entrance of Stenon Salaminos and is marked by a lightedbuoy.13.22 Dangerous wrecks are reported to lie about 0.8 mile N, 0.6mile ENE, 0.8 mile ENE, and 1.8 miles NE of the N entranceof Stenon Salaminos.13.22 Caution.—An extensive area, 0.4 mile wide, within whichanchoring and stopping are prohibited, extends NE and SEbetween the N entrances of Poros Megaron and Stenon Salaminosand may best be seen on the chart.13.22 A submarine pipeline lies close W of Akra Ayios Nikolaosand extends between the N and S shores of Kolpos Elevsinos.13.22 A prohibited area, which may best be seen on the chart,fronts a small harbor, used by naval craft, lying at the W side ofOrmos Palaska, 1.5 miles E of the N entrance of Stenon Salaminos.13.23 Nea Peramos (38˚00'N., 23˚25'E.) is situated on theNW shore of the gulf, 0.8 mile NNE of the N entrance of PorosMegaron. This town can easily be identified by its conspicuouschurch. A tall mast and several prominent buildings stand at anairport close N of the town.13.23 Akra Ayios Nikolaos (38˚02'N., 23˚29'E.), located 3.5 milesENE of Nea Peramos, is surmounted by a chapel.
