58Make Command(default keyboard shortcut Return )LightWave 10 - ModelerThe Make command (Located at the bottom ofModelers Interface) will commit to the changes madewith the currently selected tool and will deactivate thecurrent tool.Symmetrical SelectionWhen you select polygons/points on the positive X axisand Symmetry Mode (Symmetry button) is active,polygons/points/edges on the negative X axis are alsoselected (or deselected).Symmetry Mode(default keyboard shortcut Shift Y)Working in Symmetry Mode (Symmetry button, locatedalong bottom edge) works on selection, as well as onediting. This mode will allow you to work on one half ofyour object and Symmetry will perform all edits andselection on the opposite side of the geometry.Symmetrical EditingOperations on the positive side of the X axis also inverselyaffect the negative side of the X axis. When this mode isactive, your object is theoretically split in half at X=0.Generally, you should perform all of your edits on thepositive side of the X axis when using Symmetry. Usingthe negative side may lead to unpredictable results.Polygons/points/edges must be exactly opposite eachother on the positive and negative sides of the X axis forthis command to work properly.HINT: Symmetrical Modeling: Many of theModeling tools will work in Symmetrymode. Most of the Modify menu toolswork fine. Others such as bevel or smooth shift alsowork. Some tools such as Bandsaw do not work inSymmetry mode. In such a case you may have to usethe tool on one side then use the Mirror tool to makesure the changes are done on both sides of the X Axis.Surface: Change Surface(default keyboard shortcut Q)The Change Surface command (Located at the Bottomof Modeler’s Interface) will bring up the Change Surfacedialog to set the surface name and basic attributes for theselected polygons. If you get unpredictable results, make sure the negativesidegeometry is exactly the mirror of the positive-sidegeometry with X=0 as the center point. If the negativesidegeometry is the slightest bit off, it will not be affected.Generally speaking, this mode was meant to be usedwhere the geometry to the left and the one to the right ofX=0 mirror each other. (However, all of the geometry doesnot need to be a mirror image, only the portion you wantto work on symmetrically.)NOTE: The Fit Selected command (ShiftA) respects symmetry. If both sides ofan object are selected and Symmetry isactive, then only one-half of the selection is used tocompute the fit.Name — This defines the surface name of the selectedpolygons. The Pop-Up menu will let you choose fromexisting surfaces.Make Default — Selecting this option will assign thissurface to any geometry created after the surface ismade.Set Initial Color — This option determines whether or notyou can set basic attributes for your surface.Color — Color is probably the most obvious surfaceparameter. It doesn’t take much experience to knowthat if we want something to look like a banana, weneed to make it yellow, right? However, since youare dealing with a 24-bit color palette and, thus, over 16 million colors, there are probably thousandsof shades of yellow. Moreover, other settings, suchas Diffuse, can have a dramatic effect on the finalrendered color.
