7-134 INTERACTIVE <strong>FAMILY</strong> HISTORIESJOSEPH WILEY <strong>BROOKS</strong> (2.3.2.3) is the son of Joseph Daniel Brooks andTeresa Maria (Sikes) Brooks. Joseph was born on April 23, 1847 in Georgia.Joseph was a student at the Marietta Military Academy. Joseph was commissioneda Lieutenant and sent to Andersonville to help guard Federal prisoners.Tradition has it that he died there, but the record in the family Bible records indicatethat he died on September 5, 1866. James was born on January 12, 1850 in Georgia.On January 7, 1873, James Brooks married Anna M. Moore. Anna was born onSeptember 15, 1854 and was the daughter of L. M. Moore and M. G. Moore.James and Anna Brooks were the parents of six children:............Roland Edgar Brooks (2.3.2.4.1), b. February 14, 1874, Milledgeville, Georgia............Rosa Clifford Brooks, b. September 5, 1876, Georgia............Ethel Brooks, b. 1879, Georgia............Robert Preston Brooks (2.3.2.4.3), b. July 23, 1881............Carlton Parks Brooks (2.3.2.4.4), b. 1883............Henry Candler Brooks (2.3.2.4.5), b. December 20, 1885In 1880, James and Anna Brooks were living in Milledgeville in BaldwinCounty, Georgia. James Brooks was a merchant in Milledgeville, Georgia.James and Anna Brooks later lived in Upson County, Georgia. James was aminister of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was licensed to preach in 1882.For some time he was a member of the North Georgia Conference and in Decemberof 1884 was transferred to the Colorado Conference. In his brief time inColorado, James had a rather successful career. He became editor of the ColoradoMethodist and President of a so-called seminary located in Las Vegas, NewMexico. Writing from Las Vegas on April 8, 1885, he gave some details aboutthe seminary. It had a two-story brick building and there were three teachers,himself and two women, and ninety-three student from many states. JamesHenry Brooks died in Colorado on April 9, 1886. After James’ death, AnnaBrooks returned to Milledgeville with her four small children and remained thereuntil her death in 1907. Both James and Anna Brooks were buried in the MemoryHill Cemetery in Milledgeville, Georgia.
