BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY 7-397JORDAN BROOKS (9.1)Jordan Brooks who married Elizabeth Cockram could be related to the author’sBrooks line, but this connection should be considered very speculative. ThisBrooks line resided in many of the same places that this author’s Brooks line resided:Putnam County, Georgia, Upson County, Georgia and Dale County, Alabama. They also resided in many neighboring and nearby counties: MorganCounty, Georgia, Jones County, Georgia, Crawford County, Georgia, CoffeeCounty, Alabama and Chambers County, Alabama. However, the Brooks surnameis a very common surname and there are many other Brooks families residingin these same counties. The given names are common between this lineand the author’s Brooks line: specially Jordan Brooks and Robert Brooks beingprominent given names in both lines. According to Marion B. Brunson,“Judson” Jordan Brooks married “Mary” Elizabeth Cochran. This author hasfound no supporting documentation of either first name, Judson or Mary.Assuming that Jordan was around twenty years of age when he married ElizabethCockram in 1815, Jordan Brooks was born around 1795. The 1850 censusof Coffee County, Georgia indicate that Elizabeth was born around 1800 whichsupports the 1795 birthdate, maybe even even later than 1795, however, the ageof widows are often older than census records indicate. Several family recordsindicate that Jordan Brooks was born in South Carolina but this author has notfound any direct documentation supporting this birthplace. The author’s directancestor, Jordan Brooks (2), was found in Edgefield County, South Carolina upto 1807, therefore, all documenation of any Jordan Brooks residing in EdgefieldCounty, South Carolina would be Jordan Brooks (2), the author’s direct ancestor. Many researchers have speculated that Matthew Brooks was the brother of JordanBrooks (9.1). The 1850 census of Coffee County, Alabama indicate thatMatthew Brooks was born in South Carolina in 1783 which would support thebirthplace of Jordan being South Carolina. There are many researchers that state that Robert Brooks was the father of JordanBrooks (9.1). This is confirmed by the 1827 deed of gift where RobertBrooks, “in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and bearunto my beloved sons, Jordan Brooks and Thomas J. Brooks.” This deed wasdated November 23, 1827 and was recorded in Crawford County, Georgia. Thisestablishes that Robert Brooks was the father of at least two sons:............Jordan Brooks............Thomas J. BrooksIn 1972, Marion Brunson stated that the father of Jordan Brooks (9.1) was “believedto Robert Rose Brooks, son of Robert Brooks of Mecklenburg County,Virginia.” However, the will of Robert Rose Brooks (1.2) indicates that RobertRose Brooks (1.2) was the father of Jordan Gilmore Brooks (born 1822). Thechildren of Robert Rose Brooks (1.2) that were mentioned in his will were froma marriage late in life and family tradition indicates that he was married twicepreviously and had many more children. However, it is not very likely that henamed two sons by the same given name, Jordan (however, this author doeshave another line where this was the case). Robert Rose Brooks first married in
