BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY 7-7INTRODUCTION continuedInformation has been obtained from many sources and references are listed witheach descendant in order to aid future research on the future Brooks family researchers. Some of the information obtained on the Brooks family was conflictingor incomplete. Suggestions for additions and corrections are welcomed. Also, additional documentation which can be added as references would also beappreciated. The authors wish to thank the numerous Brooks families withwhich we have corresponded. Some major contributors include (in order as theyappear the book): Leonard J. McCown, Beverly A. Sheeky, Linda (Lewis)Lepow, John M. Sheftall, Karen D. Rocher, Roberta J. Lumpkin, Thomas E.Pipes, Courtney C. Brooks, II, Travis Mills, Ida Marie (Smith) Williams, Sally(Brooks) Mittel, Noma (Brooks) Grunewald, Johnnie (Brooks) Aldis, AltonHowell Brooks, Opal (Ashley) Yundt, Howard T. Lee, Dee Ann Wimberley,Frank Austin Brooks, Eunice (Dobie) Watson (Hill research) and over 100 othercontributors. In order to preserve these sources of information, their names arelisted as references for each descendant that they provided information about. This book uses the Henry numbering system which is based on the direct ancestorsof the authors. The oldest proven Brooks ancestor of the authors is RobertBrooks, Sr. from Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Robert Brooks, Sr. was assignedthe number (1). Each succeeding generation of direct ancestors of the authorswere assigned consecutively higher numbers. The table of contents chartsall the known ancestors of the authors and their assigned numbers. Each numberappended to the first number represents a generation of descendants of a directancestor of the authors. Each child takes his/her Brooks related parent’s numberand appends a unique child number to it. An example of this numbering systemis as follows: David Allen Brooks was assigned the number, (4.8.11.1). David’sfather’s number would be David’s number without the last digit appended to it,(4.8.11). Looking up this number, it can determined that David’s father is BenDean Brooks (4.8.11). Dropping the last digit off of the number assigned to BenDean Brooks would result in the number of (4.8). Looking up this number, itcan determined that Ben’s father is Sylvester Wyatt Brooks (4.8). By leaving offthe right-most digit again, would result in the number of (4). Looking up thisnumber, it can be determined that Sylvester Wyatt’s father is Francis AsberryBrooks (4). This number, being a single digit, indicates that Francis AsberryBrooks is also a direct ancestor of the authors. The father of Francis AsberryBrooks (4) can be determined by subtracting one from his number resulting inthe number (3). Looking up this number, the father of Francis Asberry Brooks(4) is Williamson Brooks (3). Similarly, Williamson’s father would be JordanBrooks (2) and Jordan’s father would be Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). Other examplesof this numbering system are shown on the following page.
