<strong>BROOKS</strong> <strong>FAMILY</strong> <strong>HISTORY</strong> 7-63PENELOPE <strong>BROOKS</strong> (1.4) is the daughter of Robert Brooks, Sr. and BramblyBrooks. Because Penelope married in 1787 and her father gave consent for themarriage indicates that Penelope was probably born in the late 1760’s. On October16, 1787, “Nelly” Brooks married Frederick Jones in Mecklenburg County,Virginia. Frederick was born around 1765 and is the son of William Jones (born1737). Nelly’s brother, Jordan Brooks, signed the surety bond and Nelly’s father,Robert Brooks, Sr. gave consent.From 1789 to 1793, Frederick Jones is shown in the Mecklenburg County, Virginiapersonal property tax lists in the same household with his father-in-law,Robert Brooks, Sr. On March 18, 1794, Robert and Abigail Brooks gave FrederickJones 150 acres on Great Creek in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. From1796 to 1810, Frederick Jones appears on Mecklenburg County, Virginia personalproperty tax lists. On May 11, 1804, Penelope Jones is listed in the will ofher father, Robert Brooks, Sr. On January 1, 1807, “Frederick Jones and wifePenelope” were involved in a Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginiaconcerning the division of slaves in the estate of Robert Brooks, Sr., Nelly’s father.On October 9, 1809, “Nelly Brooks who married Frederick Jones” was involvedin a second Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Robert’ssecond wife, Abigail (Ellis) Brooks, had brought suit against her step-childrenfor allotment of her widow’s dower. Frederick and Penelope Jones were the parentsof nine children:............Richard P. Frederick Jones had died prior to December 16,1817 when an inventory and appraisement of his estate was recorded inMecklenburg County, Virginia. On January 26, 1818, Nelly (Brooks) Jones ismentioned in her father-in-law’s will in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. OnMarch 5, 1855, Eleanor (Brooks) Jones signed her will in Mecklenburg County,Virginia. Her will was later recorded on April 19, 1858 indicating that Eleanor(Brooks) Jones died in the early part of 1858.On August 8, 1809, Robert Jones married Betsey Guy. On December 8, 1810,Robert Jones married a second time to Betsey A. Jackson. Robert Jones died in1859. On September 28, 1830, Martha Jones married her first cousin, BaxterLambert. Eleanor Jones married John Rittenburg.Frederick W. Jones died in 1834.
