Sterling was promotedto a Lieutenant in the Confederate Army. On July 4, 1863, SterlingBrooks was listed as one of the Confederate officers captured at the battle ofVicksburg, Mississippi. He was paroled on July 13, 1863 after signing an oathto “not take up arms against the United States" - but re-joined the ConfederateArmy and was again captured in the battle of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
