Brief Description of Research Conducted in This Lab
INCLUDING POSSIBLE PROBLEMS FOR FIREFIGHTERS WITHIN:
Synthetic organic chemistry laboratory with an emphasis on the preparation of new
donors of nitric oxide (NO) or compounds capable of interaction with the enzyme nitric
oxide synthase (NOS). Use of typical flammable laboratory solvents, mineral acids,
solvent stills and compressed gas cylinders. Flammable solvents are stored in a nonflammable
cabinet in the back of the laboratory. Water reactive materials are stored in
the explosion proof freezer in the back right of the laboratory and on the middle shelf in
Room 15. Mineral acids are stored beneath hoods on the right side of lab. Solvent stills
are located at the front left side of the lab. Compressed gases include argon and nitrogen
and one (3 ft.) tank of ammonia located at the front left side of the lab. Lecture bottles of
nitric oxide gas are found in the front right side hood. Laboratory contains several
vacuum pumps, rotary evaporators, an analytical balance and other analytical equipment
including a gas chromtograph and high pressure liquid chromatograph (HPLC).
