Research usually involves working with selective types or classes of chemicals. Prepare brief summaries in this section for handling spent chemicals peculiar to your lab. Room 17: General Activity - Synthetic Organic Chemistry. Room 17 contains flammable organic solvents, halogenated and non-halogenated, organic chemicals, concentrated acids, sodium metal, compressed gas cylinders, and silica gel. These materials are stored in labeled containers in an explosion proof refrigerator, under various fume hoods and on shelving around the laboratory. Waste organic solvents and chemicals are separated as non-sulfur and non-halogen containing organic compounds and stored in labeled containers under a fume hood. Sulfur and halogen containing organic waste is placed in separate labeled containers. Used silica gel is stored in a labeled plastic container in a fume hood. When full, these waste containers are transferred to the large waste containers in room # 20. 80
