Dr. Welker – Lab Room # 13 SPECIFIC PROCEDURES FOR SAFE REMOVAL OF HIGHLY TOXIC WASTE Consult with your research advisor concerning proper methods for packaging and storing extremely hazardous waste. Research usually involves working with selective types or classes of chemicals. Prepare brief summaries in this section for handling spent chemicals peculiar to your lab. Handling, Storing and Removal of Gases: This lab uses chlorine gas, ammonia, carbon monoxide (toxic), sulfur dioxide (toxic), and carbonyl sulfide (always work in fume hood). Always label cylinders, secure strap or chain cylinders to wall. When cylinders are not in use, shut the valves and relieve the regulator and cap the cylinders. Segregate gas cylinder storage from the storage of other chemicals. Keep in compatible classes of gases stored separately and keep flammable reactives, which include oxidizers and corrosives, away from cylinders. Segregate empty and full cylinders. To remove empty cylinders, place cylinder in its original shipping box, sealed with packing tape, and ship back to manufacturer (or give them to a local company). Preparation of Mercury (Used) for Reclamation: Mercury must be clean and free of any salts or solvents before it can be sent for reclamati Work in a fume hood, wearing gloves and safety glasses. Obtain a large pan and two large beakers. Fill one beaker about 1/4 full with water. Place some waste mercury * into the beaker containing water. Swirl contents of beaker and carefully decant water into the other beaker. Repeat until mercury appears clean and free of salts. Store mercury in appropriate container in well-ventilated area. Water may be poured down drain. * If mercury has been used in an amalgam with sodium, when reaction is complete, open the flask to the air for at least one day in a fume hood. Stir mercury with some isopropanol for a few hours to quench any sodium remaining. Decant the isopropanol. Mercury is ready to be cleaned and stored for reclamation. 89
