Chapter 1: Getting StartedFigure 1.17. Canary’s Save As... dialog box. The buttons at the bottom letyou specify the file format. To save a single view of a signal, activate the corresponding pane, and chooseSave Pane... or Save Pane As... from the File menu (the menu will actuallyshow Save Sound, Save Spectrogram or Save Spectrum, depending on whichpane is active).Depending on which pane is active, different combinations of radio buttonswill be available at the bottom of the dialog box to let you specify the formatof the file to be saved. Canary format is the default file type for all three panes. For sound (waveform) files, SoundEdit or AIFF formats result in the smallestfiles and are the fastest to open in Canary. File formats are discussed further inChapter 10.Working with more than one signalCanary lets you work with more than one signal at a time. The actual numberof signals you can have open at once is limited by the amount of memoryavailable to Canary, the length of the signals, and how many spectrogramsand spectra you’ve built. Each pane in a signal window requires memory forthe storage of the data displayed in it, so a signal window that has never had aspectrogram or a spectrum computed for it takes less memory than the samesignal would with either of these views. 11 The issue in determining memory requirements is whether these views have beencomputed, not whether they are currently displayed. Once they’ve been computed,Canary saves the resulting data even if you turn off the spectrogram or spectrumpanes, so that the pane can be displayed again later without re-computation.30 Canary 1.2 User’s Manual
