3. SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONSThe report contains more than 60 recommendations that will, when implemented, make the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Guelph</strong> age-ready and age-friendly. Of these recommendations, six (6) are broad in scope andfoundational in importance. The balance <strong>of</strong> the recommendations focus more specifically onrequired action in each <strong>of</strong> the eight (8) WHO dimensions.FOUNDATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS1. THAT the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Guelph</strong> commit to a comprehensive multi-year Older Adult Strategy to ensurethe <strong>City</strong> is age-ready and can be designated age-friendly.2. THAT, in order to embed the multi-year commitment to the Strategy, the <strong>City</strong> adopt thefollowing three measures:• Create an Older Adult Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>Council</strong>• Establish a small (2-person) Older Adult staff team with overall responsibility forStrategy implementation , nested under the well-being strategy and reporting to the<strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the Chief Administrative Officer• Create a standing cross-departmental Implementation Project Team.3. THAT the <strong>City</strong> ensure that all aspects <strong>of</strong> the Older Adult Strategy are inclusive; that it addressthe entire age range <strong>of</strong> older adults (55+) and the needs <strong>of</strong> different ethnic, cultural, languageand income groups.4. THAT the <strong>City</strong> integrate the themes and messages in the Older Adult Strategy in acomprehensive <strong>City</strong> communications strategy.5. THAT the <strong>City</strong> demonstrate leadership in ensuring that older adult residents have access to awide variety <strong>of</strong> programs and services to support their ability to successfully age in place.6. THAT the <strong>City</strong> apply a Seniors’ lens to all existing and proposed new programs and services.RECOMMENDATIONS BASED ON THE EIGHT WHO DIMENSIONS OF AGE-FRIENDLINESSBUILDINGS AND OUTDOOR SPACES7. Undertake a coordinated review <strong>of</strong> <strong>City</strong> streets and spaces to consider ways <strong>of</strong> addressingidentified gaps and barriers to accessibility. Such a review to include prioritization <strong>of</strong>identified maintenance required for sidewalks and curb cuts, with consideration <strong>of</strong> options forspeeding up required maintenance.8. Broaden the scope <strong>of</strong> the Snow Angels program to serve more older adults9. Identify locations throughout the city to install more public washrooms. Review what othercities around the world are doing to ensure safety, cleanliness, design. Develop multi-yearaction plan.10.
