12 THE INDEX, Saturday, February 18, 1928 M U S I C A N D A R T THOSE who appreciate the delicate beauty and grace of dry point etchings will revel in the collection, by Louis Icart, that Wunderly Brothers are now displaying in their galleries. Charming in subject, light as air in their grace and treatment, with such colors as one finds now and then when sunlight flashes on water drops, are these some two dozen or more of Icart etchings. They will remain until the first of March. Also on display in these galleries is a cottage home scene of mother and small children, by Bernard Pothast. There is tenderness and sympathy in the way the artist has done his work here; the small group is life-like, charming in composition and color. Then, too, there may be seen an etching of Pittsburgh, done by Anton Schutz, whose drawings of New York's famous sky lines have occasioned so much favorable comment. Mr. Schutz betook himself, at the suggestion of an appreciative Pittsburgher, to the top of the Oliver Building and from that vantage point made his drawing. For next month the Wunderly Galleries have planned an exhibition of reproductions of old master drawings — including Durer, Holbein, Rembrandt and Van Leyden. Also, an exhibition of Dutch marines and landscapes, painted by Charles Gruppe. The Macbeth Galleries, 15 East Fifty-seventh Street, New York, are announcing two interesting exhibitions that opened February 14. One is a collection of sculpture by Gleb Derujinsky, the other paintings of the Canadian Rockies, by Belmore Browne. Both shows will close February 27. The second annual intercollegiate Glee Club Contest with five colleges competing, Penn- State, Allegheny, Juniata, Bucknell and Carnegie Tech, will be held Friday evening, February 24, in Carnegie Music Hall. Each school will have 30 men entered who will appear in their own college song first and later in the Broken Melody which is the competition number for this year. The program will close with Kremser's ''Prayer of Thanksgiving" with 150 men singing under the direction of Harvey Gaul. Most of the schools were entered last year. Allegheny College is a new entrant and much interest is aroused among the different college circles. The judges who are selected by the committee are the same as last year. Dr. Will Earhart, Ernest Lunt and J. Fred Lissfelt. Charles Boyd will act as master of ceremonies. James A. Bortz is the local man- Marion Engle, pianist, will be heard in recital at Carnegie Lecture Hall March 2. She will play a program including Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy. Dr. Caspar Koch will give the regular free organ recital in Carnegie Hall, North Side, at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Leon Pagan, French baritone, will be the guest soloist and Frederick Rosenfeld will play the piano accompaniment. The program opens with Dr. Koch's transcription of Mendelssohn's Overture to "A Midsummer Night's Dream," written when the composer was but 17 years of age. His voice is resonant, flexible and rich. An entire program of music by Bach has been arranged by Dr. Charles Heinroth for his free organ recital tonight at 8:15 o'clock in Carnegie Music Hall. This special program was planned for the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Guild of Organists who will attend the recital. In commemoration of the centenary of Schubert's death the first two talks will be devoted to a discussion of the music of that composer. All the talks will be illustrated by Dr. Heinroth with selections played on the organ or vanni _ Mozart piano.
