vaudeville to be presented at the
Davis Theatre the week of
March 5. The screen offeringwill
be Will Eogers in "The
Texas Steer."
Charles Withers is a character
comedian whose specialty is impersonating
the manager of a
rural opera house. Not only is
he manager, but orchestra leader,
stage crew and the entire
executive staff. The character
of "Silas Splivans, Manager," is
as closely associated with Withers,
as Rip Van Winkle was with
the older Jefferson, but each season
he carries him through a
new series of events, thereby
keeping the act alive.
The face, figure and dancingability
of the beautiful Vannessi,
who comes escorted by the
Gamble Boys and Sonny Hines,
to give an exhibition of her skill,
has been the talk of the Rialto
for the past three seasons. Vannessi
performs her high kicks,
tap dancing, a lovely waltz and
an interpretive dance, while the
boys entertain with the song and
dance.
Ann Butler and Hal Parker
will present a bright melange of
song and patter; Chilton and
Thomas, with their "Dance Sensations,"
offer something different
in fancy stepping; Frank
Evers and Greta do thrillingstunts
in their "Dance Creations
on the Wire." Another act, not
yet announced, will bring the
vaudeville to a close.
In the photoplay feature Will
Rogers, comedian "congressmanat-large,"
has a strong supporting
cast in his tale of the Texas
cattleman sent to congress
against his will. News Reels
and Topics of the Day will be
shown.
FROM March 17 to April 15,
the Photographic Section
of the Academy of Science
and Art of Pittsburgh will hold
its fifteenth annual Salon in the
galleries of Carnegie Institute.
March 16 will be Press Night.
The jury chosen for this year,
Nicholas Haz, of New York,
Holmes I. Mettee, of Baltimore,
and Paul Wierum, of the Chicago
Camera Club, spent the past
week-end in Pittsburgh, deciding
on the pictures eligible to this
year's Salon. The entries for
the coming show are the greatest
number yet submitted, coming
from far and near, including
Japan, Australia, the Crimea,
Czecho-Slovakia, Poland, Italy,
Belgium, Spain, Switzerland,
Germany, England, Uruguay
and Canada. Out of 1500 prints
submitted, about 340 have been
accepted for the Salon. A number
of Pittsburghers will be represented
and many new names will
be noted. There is an absence of
many names with which the visitor
to the preceding Salons has
grown familiar. One of the exhibitors
in the coming show was
formerly a taxi-driver in New
York and as usual there are a
number of Japanese represented.
