aviation film
''Wings" opens its
Pittsburgh premiere at the Nixon
Theatre. After Monday there
will be two performances daily—
2:30 and 8:30 P. M.
CLARA BOW
In "Wings," the Nixon attraction for
the week of April 9.
"Wings" depicts in realistic
and gripping scenes the heroism
of American aviators in the
World War. The picture was
filmed with the active co-operation
and assistance of the War
Department. It is said one hundred
and twenty aeroplanes,
piloted by seasoned aviators,
were used in the making of the
St. Mihiel battle scenes in which
six thousand soldiers participated.
Stirring duels two miles
up in the clouds with a group of
American aces fighting for life
against one of the celebrated circuses
; the bombing of a gigantic
Gotha; the actual destruction of
observation balloons, and scores
of other thrilling air scenes go
to the making of "Wings."
The story was written by
John Monk Saunders, an aviator
and instructor of aeronautics
during the war. It was directed
by William A. Wellman, a young
man from Massachusetts who
served in the Lafayette Escadrille.
The cast contains Clara
Bow, since become a star;
Charles Rogers and Richard Arlen,
who have since become
prominent young leads. Among
others in the cast are H. B.
Walthall, Julia Swayne Gordon,
Gary Cooper, El. Brendel, Arlette
Marchal and Hedda Hopper.
"Wings" will have an unusual
presentation. J. S. Zamecnik
has provided a beautiful and
mostly original score. In addition
there will be elaborate
sound effects. The Magnascope,
used to advantage in the showing
of "Old Ironsides," will also
be featured.
STANLEY
A stage presentation of frolic
and mirth, entitled "Sky Blues,"
will be the Stanley Theatre stage
offering for the week of April 9.
The screen attraction will be
Clara Bow in her latest hit, "Red
Hair."
ensemble made up of six separate
and distinct vaudeville acts,
including The Frolic Four, The
Four Masters, Mignon Laird,
Charles Elby, Gladys Wheaton,
and Luna Nestor, ballerina, who
appears as solo dancer with the
Alexis Kosloff Ballet. "Red
Hair" depicts Clara Bow, the
mad-cap of the screen, in the
role of a gold-digging manicurist.
Lytell, popular star of the stage
and screen, in a one-act playlet
"The Valiant." The screen program
will feature "Woman
Bert Lytell has interrupted his
screen career to take this one
star in the dramatic field before
he went into pictures and is
he appeared at a Lambs Gambol.
It was written by Halworthy
Hall and Robert Middlemass,
