12 THE INDEX, Saturday, April 28, 1928 M U S I C A N D A R T IN the Wunderly Galleries is a small exhibition of paintings by A. H. Gorson, of Pittsburgh and New York, including eight or nine canvases. Pittsburghers have been familiar for years with the work of Mr. Gorson, who finds much that is paintable in the city's steel mills and furnaces, but it seems to be a new Gorson who has come back with this group of pictures. The magic of fire seems to have touched his brush. There are several daylight scenes, showing the mills, trailing clouds of smoke and steam, foiled against a blue sky that is reflected in the river. These are alluring but it is the night scenes, in the flare of the flame and the surroundings it lights, that Mr. Gorson has excelled. Tiny flecks of light, the lamps on passing small river craft, from homes on the hills above the rivers, continue the impression of brilliance that the fires of the mills give forth. The exhibition continues until the first of the week. Anne Griffiths will present a program of music by contemporary composers, assisted by T. Carl Whitmer, in the Y. M. and W. H. Association, Tuesday evening, May 1, at 8:15. The sopranos will be Isabelle Hoffman, Frances B. Gooding and Marion de Paull; contraltos, Patti Rude Baldridge and Sarah Jamison Logan; tenors, Eugene T. Baldridge and Ernest Malapert ; baritone, T. Reed Kennedy. Earl Mitchell will be the accompanist. An exhibition of early Nineteenth Century English sporting prints, engraved and printed in color, are now on display at the J. J. Gillespie Company Galleries. They are engraved by such engravers as Thomas Dean, C. Bentley Sculp, I. Clark and F. Rosenberg. With the above exhibition two very beautiful little hunt paintings by W. J. Shayer are being shown.
