10 THE INDEX, Saturday, May 26, 1928 C L U B S - P H I L A N T H R O P I E S - C I V I C S Yesterday afternoon the Daughters of the American Revolution, Pittsburgh Chapter, held their final meeting for the season in the Hotel Schenley supper-room. Annual reports were read by both the Pittsburgh Chapter and the Fort Pitt Society and officers were elected. The Nominating Committee for the Pittsburgh Chapter, Mrs. Marcellin C. Adams, chairman, Miss Pauletta Guffey, Mrs. William R. Crabbe, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Mellor and Mrs. Telesio Lucci, presented the following ticket: Regent, Mrs. William D. Hamilton; first vice regent, Mrs. Henry C. McEldowney; second vice regent, Mrs. Mortimer Miller; third vice regent, Mrs. Howard N. Eavenson; fourth vice regent, Mrs. James E. Umbstaetter; recording secretary, Mrs. John P. Penney; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Edward G. Caughey; treasurer, Mrs. Verner S. Gaggin; assistant treasurer, Mrs. G. Cook Kilball; registrar, Mrs. George W. Herriott; assistant registrar, Miss M. Neil Stewart; historian, Mrs. Robert T. Reineman. Directors, to serve two years, Mrs. William Thaw, Jr., Mrs. Biddle Arthurs, Mrs. Sumner B. Ely, Mrs. Joseph W. Marsh and Mrs. William W. Dickey. The Fort Pitt Society Nominating- Committee, Mrs. Cooke Bausman, Mrs. John C. Sherriff and Miss Alice M. Thurston, presented the following directors to serve two years for the Society: Miss Harding, Mrs. Moses Atwood, Mrs. J. B. McCormick, Mrs. W. S. Foster, Mrs. Edward B. Scull and Mrs. Frances R. Lewis. Mrs. Biddle Arthurs, the retiring regent, presided at the meeting, which was followed by an informal tea. At seven o'clock tonight "The Strollers," local radio entertainers, will broadcast Mrs. Sarah C. Pettit's new play, "Heredity Versus," over Station WCAE, under the direction of Miss Mae Sweeny. The cast includes Gregg Bridges, Vincent Griffen, Gerard Mac- Ateer, Claude Morris and Miss Sweeny. Mrs. Pettit, well known in club circles, is a member of the play-writing group of the Congress of Clubs. Although this is her first radio sketch several of her plays have been produced in the Twentieth Century Club and the East End Carnegie Library. Her "Hour by the Fountain" will be given soon at Seton Hill College, under the direction of Mrs. Mary Jones Sherrill. Two of Mrs. Pettit's plays, when presented by the "Play and Players Club" of Philadelphia, took prizes. Dr. Henry Dwight Chapin, of New York City, will speak in the lecture room of Carnegie Hall tonight at a quarter past eight o'clock, on "The Speedwell Plan of Child Saving in Theory and Practice." Dr. Chapin, one of the greatest authorities in this country on Pediatrics, has just returned from a trip around the world, during which he has lectured, by request, in many European and Asiatic countries. He comes here under the auspices of the Pittsburgh Pediatric Society, with the affiliation of the child-welfare agencies of the city. The lecture is free, and all physicians and others interested in child welfare will be cordially welcomed. As part of a benefit performance to be given in Moose Temple this evening, the Drama League Radio Players, under the direction of Mrs. Lane Thompson, will repeat the melodrama "Danger," by Richard Hughes, which was given in observance of National Drama Week from Station KDKA. The play will be given in total darkness, with the same cast who made the radio projection: Mrs. Augusta J. Steele as Mary; Chester B. Story as Jack, and Claude McNair as Mr. Bax. Assisting the cast will be a quartet of Welsh singers under the direction of Evan Lloyd, some of whom come from the town in Wales where the incident upon which the play is based actually hapjtened. The drama will be repeated at the request of radio listeners, who sent in a record number of letters after the projection of the play in February. Tonight the Women's International League for Peace will have a dinner meeting in Congress Clubhouse. There will be a debate by the Pitt debaters on "Resolved: That the United States should cease to protect by force of arms the foreign investments of her citizens." Albert Leven and Miss Alice Mc Afee will have the affirmative side; David Buerger and Miss Elizabeth Smith the negative. Monday afternoon, May twenty-eighth, the Homewood Women's Club will close its season with the annual luncheon in the Edgewood Country Club. The affair is in charge of the Social Committee, Mrs. Charles W. Smith, chairman, Mrs. Charles T. Moore, Mrs. J. A. Corry, Mrs. W. T. Johnston, Mrs. M. D. Cowdrick, Mrs. Charles Hillegas, Mrs. E. W. Kennedy, Mrs. A. D. Evans and Mrs. Anna Kempton. Mrs. William M. Stevenson will be hostess at the meeting of the Colloquium Club Monday afternoon, May twenty-eighth. The year book announces the following program: "Denmark's Overseas Possessions," Mrs. Frank C. Stoeltzing; Famous Danes—"Tycho Brahe," Mrs. William F. Hill; "Thorwaldsen," Mrs. George R. West; "Hans Christian Andersen," Mrs. William I. Patterson and "Finsen," Mrs. Clark M. George. A tournament of Grecian games will be held by the Department of Health Education of Central Branch Y. W. C. A. on the grounds of Pennsylvania College for Women at four o'clock this afternoon, or, in case of rain, on June second. Following a processional of the high priest, vestal virgins, attendants, heralds and contestants, a sacrifice to the gods will be offered on the altar which will form the background of the setting. Games and races, exemplifying the contests of old Greece, will then be held. They will include javelin and discus throw, armor race, torch race, wrestling, boxing, archery, foot and chariot races. To the winners in all events, laurels will be awarded. The pageant will close with a Grecian dance and a recessional. More than one hundred and twenty-five girls will participate in this affair. Because of the unusual theme, the many and varied costumes and the beauty of the natural setting, the pageant will be one of the outstanding features of the Y. W. C. A. program for this Spring. All interested are invited to attend. The Little Theatre movement continues to spread in the Pittsburgh district, the latest entrants into the amateur theatrical field being a group of Edgewood Club members who on Tuesday night made their initial presentation before a large audience. The play was Harry James Smith's comedy in three acts, "Mrs. Bumstead-Leigh," made famous several years ago by Mrs. Minnie Maddern Fiske which was presented with the following cast: Miss Dorothy W. Hughes, Frederick L. Kolb, George Moreland, Jr., Wesley H. Cogswell, Earl D. Hollinshead, Miss Wilburta Pitkin, Miss Emma R. Cogswell, Miss Edith Conner, Miss Gertrude D. Hollinshead, Miss Ellenore Hambly McEllroy, Miss Jerry Uhl and E. W. McCallister. Mrs. Laurie A. Uhl directed the play. Three valuable cups,—the John C. Oliver Memorial cup, and others presented by Mr. William Penn Snyder, Jr., and Mr. Harvey N. Van Voorhis, will be the objectives in three of the classes at the Allegheny Country Club Horse Show, June seventh, eighth and ninth on Sewickley Heights. In addition to these there are money prizes and ribbons beguiling enough to tempt any horse owner. Mrs. Plenry Clay Bughman, Jr., is chairman of the trophy committee, assisted by Mrs. George A. Benney, Jr., Mrs. Harry Darlington, Jr., Mrs. Thomas M. Jones, III., Mrs. Telesio Lucci, Miss Mary McCune, Mrs. James M. Schoonmaker, Jr., and Mrs. William Penn Snyder, Jr. Mr. William C. Robinson has issued invitations for a riding and driving party the first day of the Show, which will have an afternoon session only. The guests will meet at the ring at five o'clock, and from there drive over the hills to Mr. Robinson's estate, Woodmont, for dinner. This is an annual party, and the guests appear in costume.
M U S I C A N D A R T A R T H U R B. Jennings, Jr., organist at the Sixth United Presbyterian Church, will give the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon free organ recitals at Carnegie Music Hall, Schenley Park, in place of Dr. Charles Heinroth, organist and Director of Music, who is now on his way to Europe. Mr. Jennings' program for this evening at 8:15, will include numbers by Bach, Widor, Gluck, and Cesar Franck. He will also play the "Concerto in A Minor" by Antonio Vivaldi. This latter composer was one of the outstanding masters of instrumental music in the early Eighteenth Century. The number which Mr. Jennings will play was composed by Vivaldi for string orchestra.
