Rich materials call to their aid
colors of like richness, and the
ally of everything smart, black.
There is a real rage for glittering
things — embroideries on
evening frocks; ornaments; and
costume jewelry with crystals
and rhinestones. Hats, bags,
shoes and frocks feature this
type of trimming, adding to the
general luxury of the mode.
Evening coats are heavy with
fur and rich with brocades, when
they are not of ermine, chinchilla
or sable. Daytime coats have
lavish fur bandings and their
materials are of the finest. Over
the entire mode lies the shadow
of the ensemble, but it is a welcome
shadow for it helps to bind
parts together into a harmonious
whole. A costume is no longer
any better than its least correct
and appropriate part.
The Winter vacationist, bound
North, is engaged in the pleasant
business of assembling a wardrobe
that will be smart, and at
the same time possess elements
of comfort. If she skees, she
will have a suit appropriate, perhaps
of the Norwegian type with
long trousers and a belted tunic,
Russian style. She will include
in her outfit a circular skirt for
skating and sports of that type,
and there will be knickers to go
under the skirt. The material of
the latter will undoubtedly be
velveteen, and there will be a
leather jacket, with a lining of
wool or fleece, to keep skirt and
knickers company. Whatever the
garment, it will button up tightly
and fasten closely at throat
and wrists, for there are certain
to be spills in the snow, and they
must be provided for.
The ardent enthusiast of Winter
sports knows the value of
wool in her outfit—apart from
leather and velveteen it is the
one essential. She may prefer
mittens of leather, fleece lined,
to match her leather coat; but
she will have wool gloves a-plenty
in her outfit for a dozen purposes.
She will not economize
on sweaters of the shaker-knit
variety, and will be divided in
her allegiance to the button-up
type and the type with the turtle
neck. There will be wool socks
of various weights, colors and
types, ranging from ski-socks to
golf socks; there will be a collection
of gay sashes for the skiing
suit and the other outfits; and
there will be scarfs and little
round caps that pull down over
the ears. They will be chosen
to harmonize, these wool accessories.
The Winter vacationist, bound
South, will face a different problem.
It will be her privilege to
dally with things wholly new,
not in fabric, but in theme, for
she is meeting the Northern
Summer more than half way.
Her frocks will be of the newest
Summer materials; her hats will
be of the most recently approved
straws; and her sports togs will
be for beach wear; or for the
links or tennis courts. Her wardrobe
will include evening gowns
and evening wraps in new and
untried models; and every accessory,
from hat to shoes, will be
in the spirit of Summer. From
her wardrobe we can learn much
as to the next-to-come mode, for
she is having the first selection
from the offerings of our foremost
designers. Let us dally
with the new things for a time.
The new fabrics include some
charming rayon and cotton
weaves, and they are likely to
prove popular. Handkerchief
linen is being featured; there are
silks very like the old "China"
silks; and there are many new
versions of the always-to-be-expected
prints. Then there are
sports togs done in Angora jersey—lovely
stuff! There is every
indication that the three-piece
sports suit, made up of skirt,
sleeveless jumper and short coat
or jacket, will be popular. It is
being shown in printed fabrics;
in the cotton and rayon mixtures;
in linen; and in wool.
Then there are some charming
frocks in silks of the habutai,
rajah, pongee, tussah types.
These materials proved their
value last Summer and their return
with Palm Beach fashions
is not unexpected.
One shop is showing some new
bathing suits in an old material
—jersey. They have brief trunks
in a dark color and a top in some
one of the pastel tones. Another
feature of these suits is the
decollete back—they are called
"evening line" or "evening back"
suits. There are some delightful
pajama suits being shown—they
always appear at this season of
the year, their object beach
wear. Our interest, at this time,
is the new fabrics, colors and
lines, rather than in beach ap-
