pastel shades will appear; and
colored kid shoes will be a feature
of shoe fashions. Of late
there have been many models in
blue kid, this novelty due to the
dominance of the blue tones in
the long list that appears on the
Spring color card.
Patent leather, suede and kidskin
seem to rule, in the order
named. In the brown range
suede and calfskin are important;
the browns combine with
beige or black; and black combines
with brown or gray. Patent
leather is used with the reptilian
leathers—the vamp of one
and the quarter of the other—
python the ruling favorite for
the purpose. Since gray is
popular in the general mode we
may expect shoes in this color—
two shades effective. The shoe
cut low at the side has found
favor with women who possess a
slender foot, but the wide foot
will spread when there is no support.
Strapped models, with one,
two, or the T-strap, are popular;
the opera in many versions is
featured; and the Oxford is
offered in many graceful versions.
Tailored pumps, one-strap
and sabot strap models, also Oxfords
and step-ins are found in
the sports group.
Fashion has returned moire
silk to favor, that lovely stuff
that used to be called "watered"
silk. The present version of it
is much lovelier, as a result of
the skill of artisan weavers who
recognize its beauty, and it is a
most supple and adaptable fabric
as we know it now. Because
it has characteristics of luxury
the new feminine theme finds it
most usable, and we note its
presence everywhere in the
mode. Afternoon frocks are
made of it, for it is so supple, in
its new form, that it not only
drapes satisfactorily, but does
everything a designer asks of it.
In one or two-piece models, it
adopts side bow details, surplice
effects, drapes, pleats and the
like. In the afternoon models
we note the new colors—melon,
violet, Chantilly Green, the
beiges and the ultra-smart "offwhite."
Formal afternoon coats are
made of it and richly trimmed
with fox, or the new flat furs,
which include sable, ermine, butter
mole and caracul. In the
evening models, which incline to
°dd shades of violet, beige, green
and the new "sailor" blue, we
see exaggerated fulness at the
side; the bustle-bow theme; and
the modern version of the robe
de style. With this fabric as a
medium, designers try out new
ideas with a fair assurance of
success. It is very effective in
models that feature the uneven
hemline. There is a tendency to
make the evening wrap that ac
companies the rather elaborate
frock simple, for contrast. Moire
is the keynote of a new fabric
group that inclines to stiffness,
and with taffeta and satin, expresses
the mode of formality.
And "watered" silk is the loveliest
of the three.
Some mention must be made
of lace, in any discussion of fabrics,
just as fabrics must be in
cluded, somewhere, in any report
on the progress of fashion. We
find this material insinuating itself
into every mode, either as
a fabric or as a trimming, for
when the frock is not made of it,
it is touched with its beauty. Beginning
with the clever lace
lace or of ruffles of narrow
