—assured, not only by the trend
in evening models, but by a perceptible
lengthening of daytime
dresses. It is noted that skirt
trimmings are placed low, and
some skirts show ruffles. Another
innovation—at times those
ruffles are repeated on the
bodice, which shows a decided
tendency to take trimmings to
itself. This assures femininity
in the new mode.
We may reasonably expect the
ensemble, when Fall modes begin
to arrive. And by this is
meant the costume suit, composed
of jacket and frock in harmonizing
and matching fabrics
and colors. There is a continual
change in the form of the ensemble,
showing that fashion
interest is centered in it. Spring
gave us the printed dress with a
coat of wool, lined with the print
of the dress. Summer has
brought new versions of it, and
we now have the printed ensemble
which makes both coat and
frock of the print, variety often
achieved by a combination of
two fabrics with the same design.
Then there are the ensembles
made wholly of Georgette,
those in navy blue exceedingly
practical for town wear, although
black, gray, white, beige
and grege are important colors
for this ensemble type.
Transparent velvet is a factor
in the ensemble group and incidentally,
velveteen coats are
making their appearance. Linen
is another Summer fabric that
has yielded to the lure of the
costume, and plain and printed
linens are combined effectively.
The sleeveless tennis dress
promises much, and it has a coat
or jacket to complete it. Bathing
attire, even the jersey swimming
suit, affected by the active
sportswoman, has an accompanying
jacket, coat or cape, and
every beach costume is complete
to its last little detail. Accessories
continue to effect two and
three way combinations, one of
the most important at the moment,
the hat, shoes and handbag
that match, either in fabric.

Perhaps there is less of prophecy
in the hats of the moment
than in anything else. This happens
because we are in the midst
of the Summer season, when the
picture hat reigns supreme, and
brims follow, as a matter of
course. The medium-brimmed
hat, planned for the woman who
may not wear the picture hat,
solves the formal afternoon
problem, and is a worthy rival
of the small hat in other respects.
So important has the
idea of a printed material be­
come, that a hat has been specially
designed for frocks made
of it. It is made of fine paillasson
straw and harmonizes with
the background of the frock.
Grosgrain ribbon, in the predominating
color of the prints,
provides the trimming. The

minds us of lace, the fabric exquisite.
The lace dress is by no means
new. If the opinion were to be
offered that tlie new mode will
feature it, there would be a
chorus of voices joining in the
assurance that lace is an important
part of the present mode.
This is all very true, but any
