14 THE INDEX, Saturday, March 10, 1928 T H E S T A G E A N D S C R E E N R A Y Dooley emerges as a full-fledged star in Eddie Dowling's "Sidewalks of New York," which Charles Dillingham will present at the Nixon Theatre for the week commencing Monday night, March 12, after a long engagement at the Knickerbocker Theatre, New York. A gifted player, Miss Dooley will be revealed not only as an impish, rough-and-ready tomboy, but also as the possessor of powers to sway the deeper emotions. RAY DOOLEY In "Sidewalks of New York," which comes to the Nixon for the week of March I 2. "Sidewalks of New York" comes here with the warmest critical commendation of the New York critics. It was described as a kaleidoscopic entertainment filled to overflowing with clever players, vaudevillians, singers and dancers, and acclaimed because of its wit and humor, dashing and spirited melodies, appealing songs, dancing features and ensembles. Eddie Dowling wrote the play and the music was contributed by Jimmy Hanley. They collaborated on "Honeymoon Lane," Dowling's whirlwind success of this and last season. Miss Dooley, as an orphan girl in love with a budding architect taken from a home by a wealthy friend of the Governor of New York, has never been seen to better advantage. With characteristic prodigality Mr . Dillingham has mounted the production and cast the company. Among the hundred odd entertainers are Smith and Dale, Fiske O'Hara, Elizabeth Murray, Linda, Ruby Keeler, Dick Keene, Jim Thornton, Josephine Sabel, Calm and Gale, Barney Fagan, Will and Gladys Ahern, Frank Kingdon, Harry Short, Winifred Harris, Carl Francis, Cecil Owen, Henry Dowling and an excellent dancing chorus. Edgar MacGregor staged the extravaganza and Earl Lindsay arranged the dances. STANLEY Emil Jannings, one of the greatest character actors of the stage or screen today, is the star of "The Last Command," the feature photoplay scheduled for the week of March 12, at the new Stanley Theatre. It is a story of the red revolt in Russia, showing Jannings as a mighty general, strictly military, but beloved by his men. He befriends SOPHIE TUCKER Will be the stage attraction at the Stanley next week. a girl, but imprisons her companion. The girl, in turn, saves him from death at the hands of revolutionists. He then comes to America in search of his rescuer and the story takes an unusual twist. Supporting the star is a capable cast including Evelyn Brent, William Powell, Nicholas Soussanin and Michael Visaroff. The international singing comedienne, Sophie Tucker, has been engaged as the stage attraction. With her in the act are her son, Bert Tucker, and the Six Tivoli Girls. They will present a lively act of music and dances with Miss Tucker as the leading spirit. News Pictures will be included in the program. DAVIS The Keith-Albee vaudeville program at the Davis Theatre next week will be headed by Nick Lucas, "The Crooning Troubador," and the screen attraction announced is "Peaks of Destiny." Lucas became known first as a phonograph artist and his name became a household word because of the manner in which he put over his songs. "Crooning" on the stage may be said to have originated with this popular singer, though other artists have since adopted it. In his act he will give a program of his Record Song Hits. Another act of importance is Rodrigo and Lila, who come direct from London and Paris to offer a series of dances interestingly assembled into a picturesque program of international flavor. Coram, England's Premier Ventriloquist, with Jerry, will present "Whitehall, London." The scene is a replica of the "Horse Guards," one of England's historical landmarks, where thousands of people go daily to watch the changing of guards. Coram and Jerry are troopers in this famous regiment. The little dummy is an ingenious piece of mechanism, constructed so that its arms, legs and head move like a human being. Coram is more than a ventriloquist. He has a super developed sense of humor. Other acts scheduled are Eileen and Marjorie, in miraculous tumbles ; Harry Bentell and Helen Gould, the Dancing Xylophonists, and the Three Swifts, in clever juggling stunts. The film feature, "Peaks of Destiny," is a thrilling story with the glorious Alps as a background. Topics of the Day and views of late happenings in the daily news will be shown. The Kaumicmn-Loobvj Shop Opens one time acting as head-buyer for the firm of Kaufmann and Baer. Ludwig Kaufmann is one of the seven brothers of that name, associated for many years with department store management in Pittsburgh. MUSIC AND ART try-side, with usually the glint of brook or creek; pastures, a group of trees, or a seascape, that he paints. Here and there he introduces life in the human figure, but this is rare and if there is life at all it is in flocks of sheep or small herds of gentle, placid cows. Quaint Dutch fishing boats ride at anchor in some of his things, in others a brightsailed boat skims before the breeze. Gruppe's canvases bring the message of the peace and serenity that nature offers in the quiet places. "Milestones in the History of Music" is the subject of the talk to be given tonight at 8:15 o'clock in Carnegie Music Hall by Dr. Charles Heinroth. Goffe; "The Lighthouse, Vermilion, Ohio," Alfred J. Haller; "Winter," R. D. Long; "Eddie's House," Elizabeth B. Robb; "Moonlight," John J. Raisbeck; "Winter," Edward Goodman; "The Last of the Garden," C. D. Forster; "A Friendly Afternoon," Albert C. Walter; "Circe," by Norwood MacGilvary, which took first award; "Old Fashioned Flowers," by Amelia L. Wessell; "Sixteen," by George M. Ericion, and "Portrait of Mother and Children," by Ramond Eifert.
