effects, especially in coats; there
seems almost no limit to the detail
that is being incorporated
into our clothes. Yet—there
continues a simplicity that is undeniable.
They are experimenting with
the princess silhouette. There
are velvet models now in use;
moire and taffeta are used for
evening frocks that are based on
this theme. It is not an exaggerated
princess line, rather a
molding of the line of the silhouette
so that one is reminded
of the days of the extreme princess
dress and the pompadour!
Mention must be made of the
tunic, which is back with us
again, its stay brief or lengthy
as we decide. It appears in two
styles—the slip-over and the
model that fastens like a coat.
From this brief listing of details
it will be readily seen that the
materials used to achieve these
effects will have to include soft
silks and crepes; sheer chiffons
and Georgettes; and wools that
possess the quality of workability.
Cottons stress this characteristic.
Fabrics are the principal medium
of decoration, and this
statement includes the combination
of two materials; two colors
; two colors and materials.
Pin tucks seem to lead in the
variety of ways that materials
are used, and they write all sorts
of stories, in characters and designs,
on every possible fabric.
Diagonals and horizontals;
scrolls, diamonds and squares;
and the sunburst motif are all
retained—there is no limit to the
ingenuity of the designer.
Buckles and buttons and ornaments
add their bit, and if there
is a contrast in trimming it will
usually be metal. Braids make
an occasional appearance, and
fringe retains a measure of
popularity. Hand work, especially
fagotting, is featured, and
beads are still lavishly used on
the formal frocks for eveningwear.
The waistline is always a detail
of interest, and we are wearing
it, at the moment, at the top
of the hips—occasionally a little
lower, if the figure requires it.
There are normal waistlines, but
for the most part this is an unbecoming
placement. Fashion
loves it, but yields to necessity.
There is not a doubt that if it
were a generally becoming line,
this normal waist, we would be
wearing it now, for the trend is
that way. In the matter of the
neckline we may suit our preference.
The V-line is favored for
daytime wear but the square and
the diagonal are classics, as is
the round; the latter the preferred
evening- line. Diagonal
trimmings make the neck following
that line a necessity, and it
is welcome because it adds to
variety without which fashion
would be lost.
As warm weather approaches
we see occasional short-sleeved
models in the shops; this is the
general rule. For resort wear
there are sleeveless tennis
frocks, at least, that is what
they are called, although we suspect
that their popularity will
not be confined to the active participants
in this sport. The
short-sleeved dress with jacket,
or three-quarters length coat,
has a chance in the coming
mode—it is such a comfortable
warm weather fashion. Long
sleeves incline to ornamentation
and width below the elbow, when
the close-fitting sleeve is not the
choice. It is interesting to note
that coat sleeves, hitherto comparatively
immune from elaborate
decoration, are assuming importance
in this respect. Which
reminds us that the coat is the
first garment of Spring to appear.
The woman who wears her
coat a second season will be a bit
puzzled as to her choice, this
year. Coats seem to absorb detail,
and there are many individual
models that show width at
the hemline and wear collars
that are quite unusual. Fur is
used in new ways, and when the
coat itself is not furred, there
must be a scarf of fur to wear
with it. Fox, if the figure is
slender, and the smaller skins, if
the figure is full. Dominating
the entire mode we have the ensemble,
which is now subject to
seasonal changes, and quite as
much a fundamental as the slim
silhouette. This coming season

it will be made up of matching
materials, and to offset any
monotony, there will be frocks
of printed fabric worn with a
coat in plain color, the latter repeated
in the pattern of the silk.
There are some charming
knitwear ensembles, and there
are those that are made of printed
materials. There are evening
ensembles, too, the latter made
up of a dress and a jacket that
is short and has sleeves, the
idea being to provide protection
for cool evenings. The material
of this jacket may be of the
frock fabric, or it may match in
color and show a fabric contrast.
Again, it may differ in both color
and material—a chiffon eveningfrock
of a pale pink shade topped
with a velvet jacket in a pastel
orchid. Hats continue small,
when they are not of the picture
variety. Shoes and hats are both
characterized by detail but it is
applied with the restraint that
makes for simplicity. In general
these characteristics prevail
—the feminine note; fine details
; restrained ornamentation;
and running through all, the ensemble
note.
