12 THE INDEX, Saturday, June 30, 1928 M U S I C A N D A R T L Y D A Neebson, a former Pittsburgh soprano, has been engaged for a recital at the Music Festival, to be given at 8 o'clock the evening of Thursday, July 12, in the Temple of Music at Conneaut Lake Park, under the auspices of the Festival Chorus of the Middle West. Miss Neebson—she was Lyda Peterson when she sang in and around Pittsburgh a few years ago—received her first training here under Lee Hess Barnes of the Pittsburgh Conservatory, now Music Director of the Festival. Later she went to New York and studied with Madame Marcella Sembrich and with Romano Romani, Rosa Ponselle's teacher. She has coached also with the best coaches in Europe and America. Miss Neebson made her debut at Beethoven Saal in Berlin, and made her American debut at Aeolian Hall, New York. This recital comes as a climax to a very successful Spring season. An added attraction to her coming recital is the fact that she is to be accompanied by a well known Pittsburgh artist. Earl Mitchell. European, as well as American, critics have spoken highly of Miss Neebson, the LYDA NEEBSON press of two Continents has given her praise for her beautiful voice and her artistry. A Pittsburgh soprano, Margaret McLanahan, has won a scholarship with Madame Ernestine Schumann Heink, the world famous contralto. Miss MARGARET McLANAHAN Wins Schumann-Heink Scholarship. McLanahan, who easily won the highest honors among 122 contestants, has had her entire vocal training in Pittsburgh with J. L. Rodrigues. She has been active also in things musical during the past few years, having sung in "Aida," "II Trovatore," "Martha" and other operas. Her radio appearances were always welcomed by "listeners in" with pleasure.
