14 THE INDEX, Saturday, March 31, 1928
T H E S T A G E A N D S C R E E N
A F T E R having played for
16 weeks at the George
M. Cohan and the Little
Theatres in New York City and
engagements in Boston and
Philadelphia to approving audiences,
Frank Craven, that delightfully
whimsical comedian
gifted in the dual capacities of
actor and playwright, will commence
a week's engagement at
the Nixon Theatre Monday
night in his new comedy, "The
19th Hole." A. L. Erlanger, with
FRANK CRAVEN
In "The 19th Hole," the attraction
booked for the Nixon Theatre next
week.
whom Mr. Craven has previously
been associated, managerially
sponsors the tour.
The title of Mr. Craven's comedy,
it should be said, in no way
bears upon the popularly accepted
meaning that "the nineteenth
hole" is said to have for the
golfing fraternity. The author,
always a keen observer of
human nature and of the traits
of his fellow men has, moreover,
a golfing motive through the
three acts perhaps because millions
of his countrymen are now
either adherents of or else more
or less familiar with the game.
However, Mr. Craven's latest
comedy, like his "Too Many
Cooks," "The First Year" and
"New Brooms" is decidedly a
domestic comedy both in spirit
and characters.
A young man of scholastic and
gentle habit and his wife, of
tastes similar to his own, arrange
to quietly pass a Summer
in a suburban community. They
find not only their neighbors but
practically all of the townspeople
deeply bitten by the golf bug
and soon the placid writer is an
ardent golfer. With a golfing
background for "The 19th Hole,"
Mr. Craven is said to have
evolved a comedy of American
life filled with highly diverting
complications, delightful satire
and abundant humor. Mr. Craven,
in the comedy's chief role,
has around him a clever cast of
characters including Dorothy
Blackburn, Kitty Kelly, Marion
Abbott, Josephine Deffry, Robert
Wayne, Homer Barton, Roy
Cochrane, Walter Andrews, Harry
Lewellyn, Howard Sidney,
John Harwood, Jay Adair Young
and Beecher Zebbs.
DAVIS
Van and Schenck, known
throughout the land as the "pennant
winning battery of songland,"
will head the Keith-Albee
vaudeville bill at the Davis The-
VAN AND SCHENCK
Will top the Davis bill during the week
of April 2.
atre for the week of April 2. The
photoplay attraction will be
Madge Bellamy in "Soft Living."
No better entertainers than
Van and Schenck, in their own
particular line, are known to the
stage. Although originally
vaudevillians, they have been
starred and featured in some of
the biggest revues and musical
comedies of the past decade.
They return to the variety periodically,
however, and their appearance
is always a signal for
rejoicing.
Mile. Rhea and Santora, in a
dancing divertissement, with
Marian Barclay, Arthur Clazin
and Joe Witt, will be another important
feature on the program.
Other acts announced include
"Lamb Chops," presented by
George M. Burns and Grace Allen,
as a super-sophisticated boy
and an equally unsophisticated
girl; Cortini, the Master Manipulator,
famous European juggler
and illusionist; The Caits Brothers,
a team of dancing comedians,
who have won the name of
the "dancers with the flying
feet," and Jean Adair, singer of
popular songs.
The screen offering, "Soft Living,"
shows Madge Bellamy as
the star of a whimsical comedy
on the modern marriage question.
STANLEY
For the stage attraction at the
Stanley during the week beginning
April 2, the Stanley Company
of America have engaged
and the Mexican Tipica Orchestra
of Thirty Soloists. It is considered
one of the world's great
musical organizations and is
making a brief American tour.
An extra attraction will be Foster,
Fagan and Cox Harmony
Singers, who w'ill be heard in a
program of popular up-to-theminute
jazz numbers, interspersed
with comedy patter and
dance numbers.
The screen attraction for the
week will be "Ladies' Night in a
Turkish Bath," billed as a shower
of laughs, and featuring Dorothy
Mackaill and Jack Mulhall
in the leading roles.
Phil Spitalny will conduct his
forty-piece symphony orchestra
lighter selections, and the usual
