10 THE INDEX, Saturday, April 21, 1928 C L U B S - P H I L A N T H R O P I E S - C I V I C S A group of Pittsburgh girls, three of them sister debutantes of Miss Virginia Goldsbury, will assist her with the sale of cigarettes at the "county fair," annual May party of the Sewickley Child Health Association, the night of May fourth in the Edgeworth Club. They are Miss Elizabeth Lupton Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. King Scott, of Devon Road; Miss Josephine Ormsby Nicola, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver P. Nicola of the Schenley Apartments, and Miss Genevieve Bell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Marshall Bell of Ridge Avenue. All came out the Winter before last. Miss Goldsbury is chairman of the Cigarette Committee, and a number of Sewickley girls are to be added to her list of aides later. Mrs. Benjamin Franklin Jones, III., a bride of last Summer, who returned recently from the South where she and her husband spent part of the Winter, will assist Miss Katherine Walker, who is chairman of the flower booth. Miss Dorothy Darsie Scaife and Mrs. W. W. Collin, Jr., are Mrs. Clarke Painter's assistants on the committee arranging the decorations of the club for the party. Miss Priscilla Brown and Miss Elizabeth Long are aiding Mrs. Gilbert Severance Rafferty, who is acting as architect for the erection of booths. Mrs. Horace Forbes Baker, who is in charge of coffee and sandwiches, is assisted by Mrs. Mark Craig. Miss Katherine Porter is helping Miss Isabel Adams on the committee taking care of cold drinks. Mrs. Lawrence Crane Woods, Jr., head of the Pop Corn Committee, is assisted by Miss Eleanor Gilchrist. Mrs. Robert A. Applegate and Miss Caroline Gilchrist are helping Mrs. Frank G. Darlington, Jr., who will supply frankfurters for sandwiches. Miss Margaret and Miss Harriet Ramsburg, Miss Rebecca and Miss Elizabeth George, Mrs. Charles F. Chubb and Mrs. Richmond F. Ball are helping Mrs. George C. Hutchinson with the ice cream supply. Beginning at ten o'clock the morning of Tuesday, April twenty-fourth, a sale of articles made in the Western Penitentiary will be held at the home of Mrs. George W. J. Bissell in Penn Avenue. The committee in charge includes Mrs. Carl ,H. Borntraeger, Mrs. George B. Berger, Jr., Mrs. J. Hartwell Hillman, Jr., Mrs. William E. McKelvy, Mrs. John A. Murtland, Miss Beatrice Hawkins, Mrs. Clinton S. Bradley, Mrs. John H. K. Burgwin, Mrs. Frank A. Leovy, Mrs. H. S. McKinney, Mrs. John C. Sheriff and Mrs. J. Dawson Gallery. By the making and selling of these articles the prisoners are able to contribute toward the support of their families. Many of the articles are of surprising beauty. Invitations for the School of Nursing, classes of 1927-28, have been sent out by the Board of Trustees of the Elizabeth Steel Magee Hospital. The exercises will take place Tuesday evening, April twenty-fourth, in the Hotel Schenley at half past eight o'clock, with a reception immediately following. The graduates are Miss E. Orndoff, Miss Catherine Marie Grady, Miss Laura Letitia Lehman, Miss Frances Wallentine, Miss Bertile Evelyn Karns, Miss Mildred Loraine Orr, Miss Geraldine Lucille Lackey, Miss Viola Dorothea Hanson, Miss Virginia Elizabeth Morgan, Miss Ethel May Carter, Miss Elva Prost, Miss Genevieve Mary Walker, Miss Florence Mcllvaine, Miss Lois Deacon Stevens, Miss Edythe Carolyn Rauch, Miss Ruth Iseman, Miss Margaret Hilt Chappell, Miss Nellie Beatrice Keirn, Miss Cleo Loretta Beck, Miss Sadie Eleanor McPherson, Miss Anna Louise Chiade, Miss Mildred Esmeralda Metz, Miss Anna Belle Nicholson, Miss Margaret Linn Grant, Miss Madge Erma Davis, Miss Anna Louise Hanwell and Miss Elta Rosanna Moody. The annual meeting of the Pittsburgh Drama League will take place Wednesday evening, April twenty-fifth, in the Lecture Hall, Carnegie Institute. Election of officers at eight o'clock will be followed by a lecture to which the public is invited without admission cards. The lecturer will be Lawrence Langner, founder and director of the Theatre Guild, New York, which has more than a quarter of a million members. In his capacity as director of the Guild Mr. Langner has made most of the arrangements between the Guild and the leading dramatists such as Bernard Shaw, Eugene O'Neill, A. A. Milne, St. John Ervine, Pirandello and Ferenc Molnar. The subject chosen for the address will be "George Bernard Shaw and the Theatre Guild," because the relations of the Guild and Mr. Shaw have been particularly amusing and interesting. Mr. Langner is a patent attorney by profession and a playwright by avocation. He has written several one-act plays, "The Family Exit" and "These Modern Women" in which Chrystal Heme recently appeared in New York, and is also part author of the musical comedy "Tangerine." He was one of the founders of the Washington Square Players, one of the first organizations to give artistic plays in New York City. The Board of Directors of the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh has sent out invitations for the commencement exercises of the classes of 1927-28 of the School of Nursing in the Hotel Schenley Tuesday evening, April twenty-fourth, at half past eight o'clock, with a reception immediately after. The graduates are Miss Eloise Anna Yost, of Johnsonburg; Miss Kathryn Frances Loer, Miss Rose Eva Nurnath, Miss Kathryn Mary Smith, of Pittsburgh; Miss Frances Nellie Marley, of Saegerstown, and Miss Edith Jeannette Harvey, of Dickerson Run. Monday afternoon the Woman's Club of Sewickley Valley closed its season in the Edgeworth Club, electing the following officers : President, Mrs. Marcus W. Stoner; vice president, Mrs. John Easton McKirdy; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Horace Forbes Baker; recording secretary, Mrs. Morgan H. Bowman; treasurer, Mrs. Julian Kennedy, Jr. (re-elected). Tea followed the business meeting with the following hostesses: Mrs. Robert A. Applegate, Mrs. James E. Brown, Mrs. James A. Arrott, Mrs. Robert Wardrop and Mrs. Samuel G. Cooper. Assisting were Mrs. Hanson Thomas, Mrs. George Applegate, Mrs. James West Arrott, III., Mrs. Brooks Jarrett, Mrs. Frederick Atwood, Mrs. Roy Rose, Mrs. Charles A. Jones, Mrs. Frank Jarvis, Mrs. Robert McCague, Mrs. Francis B. Nimick, Mrs. Robert Clause, Mrs. Frederick Macintosh and Mrs. Dickinson Shields. The Western Pennsylvania Section of the Woman's Auxiliary to the A.I.M.E., will meet Tuesday afternoon, April twenty-fourth, at half past two o'clock in the home of Miss Lois Scaife, North Avenue West, North Side. Following the business meeting there will be a short program by Mrs. Louis Young, who will sing, and Mrs. Ralph E. Davis, who will read a one-act play. Mrs. James C. Rea will pour at the tea following. Cards will go out the last of next week for a musical tea that Mrs. T. M. Girdler will give for the Auxiliary in the Longue Vue Country Club May fourth. Miss Janet Geer and Mrs. Ralph D. Jones, who have been selecting girls to assist the ushers and sell candy and cigarettes between the acts at the Smith College benefit Tuesday night, April twenty-fourth, in the Alvin Theatre, have named the following to date: Miss Jewel Jarvis, Miss Barbara Ewing, Miss Pauline Page, Miss Adelaide Russell, Miss Elizabeth Russell, Miss Elizabeth Anderson, Mrs. H. Foster Robertson, Mrs. John Moore Malone, a bride of December who will be remembered as Miss Isabel Gardner, and Miss Christine McKelvy. Another group will include eight students at Peabody High School, who will enter Smith next Fall. Mrs. C. A. Mew'born is president of the Smith College Club; Mrs. Margaret Hawley Ely, treasurer and Miss Hettie McConnaughey, secretary. Walter Hampden in "Caponsacchi" will be the attraction.
