opportunity that goes with being able to produce food and allied value-added agriculturalproducts intensively so close to the greatest and most affluent market concentration in thesubcontinent.In spatial terms, Figure C.6.1 notes the rational pattern of the proposed agricultural hubsfor the province and the way these should be linked as directly as possible into the urbansystem. This means, however, that there must be commitment to structural economicchange in that (a) a symbiosis between the centralist and peripheral markets must be foundwhereby significant amounts of goods consumed in the Gauteng urban system can indeedbe sourced from its rural hinterland (that is, producers and allied agricultural industries atall scales wish to serve this market, and there must be a determination to see to it that thismarket is opened up to them in meaningful ways); and (b) cooperative installations (suchas silos, central refrigeration plants, packing and distribution) need to make it possible forall producers, regardless of scale, to meet the standards demanded of the Gauteng urbanmarket.
