THE MODELLING THAT UNDERPINS THE GSDThe GSDF as a GIS-based model, potentially embedded in a Google Earth platform andpublished on, and accessible to all, through the web. The GIS-based model measures theexisting urban structure and aims to become a decision-making tool for the Gauteng CityRegion.In the form presented, the GSDF is supported by five models:(1) an urban profile model; (2) an urban morphological model; (3) a connectivity model;(4) a bid-rent model; and (5) a virtual room model. These models are key to directing urbangrowth as they are embedded into the GIS-base and will be published on a website asillustrated.MODEL 1: THE URBAN PROFILE MODELSECTION 3: THE MODELLING ELEMENTS OF THE GSDFAn urban profile model sets out to provide users with an in-depth understanding of theurban system in any number of ways. The GIS has a multitude of layers of information inwhich are embedded existing data, policies, strategies, directives and encouragements. Itis possible to view/ explore these at will, whether at the scale of the entire province or byspecific areas or sectors. The whole province has been divided into a 10m by 10m grid,or cells (a very fine level of spatial resolution, given the overall extent of the province), andit is possible to 'drill-down' into any one, or groups, of these cells and gain a full appreciationof the associated urban profile and the implications of the GSDF for that particular point(refer to Figures 3-4 to 3-6).41 GAUTENG SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK 2011 GAUTENG GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT AGENCY
