Given that most of the parents do notknow how to read or write, the fact that their children achieved this level ofeducation constituted an extra benefit to participating in this program. Theproject goal is to increase the participation and attitudes towards educationin the community. This change in perception is one of the successes of thisproject.Moreover, stories about Roma culture were introduced in school texts overthe past two years, encouraging the integration of Roma children intosociety at-large. The promotion of Roma culture in school textbooks hashelped Roma children feel less discriminated against and more accepted bythe majority.Another aspect worthy of mention is the training of school teachers oncultural diversity. This activity will elicit an improvement in the teacher-Roma student relationship. Unfortunately, some teachers have heldextremely low expectations of Roma students, which are often manifestedby their failure to actively include these students in the lesson. The equaltreatment of Roma and non-Roma students cannot be left in the hands of the“teachers’ good will.” Training programs for the effective inclusion ofRoma children in public education should be carried out for all teachers andsocial workers in schools across the country.The inclusion of Roma teachers/mediators in public education would helpmany Roma children overcome the linguistic challenges that they face.Moreover, these figures would serve as models for the children.Unfortunately, there are very few Roma who have completed theiruniversity studies; however, there are many who have graduated from highschool. As the first generation of Roma teachers, the individuals who havesuccessfully completed their high school education could be employed asteachers or mediators. The fact that there will be Roma teachers in theirschools will help Roma children feel more secure in their new academicmilieu and more motivated to complete their studies.A. 1.5. ResultsThe introduction of this practice, which was carried out on the premises ofthe “26 Nëntori” elementary school, has facilitated the participation ofRoma children in school through gradual, yet secure, steps.
