Goal: Matching and Sorting ( continued)off and on the Light Box. Identify each and point out itsdistinctive appearance – round or oblong shape, curved orstraight sides, wide and narrow places, distinguishingbumps. Place one of the objects and its correspondingfamiliar object cutouts on the Light Box. Again, point outdistinguishing visual features of both—indicating that oneis a picture of the other. Do the same with the correspondingpicture and stencil.Activity 28: Familiar object pictures/stencils/cutoutsChoose several familiar object pictures, stencils, orcutouts, depending upon which the child is able to identifymost readily. Gather the actual items which correspond tothe pictures, stencils, or cutouts and have the child matcheach object to its representation. At first select items whichhave distinctly different shapes (e.g., the apple, spoon, andsock). Later choose similarly shaped items, such as thetoothbrush, knife and spoon.Activity 29: Familiar Object stencils and cutoutsWhen the child capably matches the actual item to itsrepresentation, begin a series of matching tasks. Forexample, give the child a stencil and the cutout. Choose asimple stencil at first, such as the ball. Have him fit thecutout inside the stencil. Have him perform the task usingthe other stencils.59
